Job Summary

The Ambulatory Central Sterile Reprocessing Dept. (CSPD) manager is responsible for the administrative and operational goals and objectives of Michigan Medicine?s Ambulatory CSPD?s. This position plans, organizes and directs the operations of several Ambulatory Central Sterile Processing Departments in accordance with Federal, State and Local standards and regulations, as well as Michigan Medicine guidelines, procedures and policies that govern decontamination, sterilization and distribution of instrumentation required for the Surgical Services department, procedural areas and clinics. The CSPD manager works in collaboration with Ambulatory Care and OR leaders, nursing/patient care leaders, support services, faculty, and staff to manage the re-processing and availability of instrumentation.

Responsibilities*

Leadership and Organizational Development:

• Strategic planning: work with the Ambulatory CSPD Director to identify unit priorities, support business efficiencies, and enhance a culture of teamwork and cooperation among staff members.
• Develop and promote innovative approaches for team development and cohesiveness throughout all levels of business operations to meet operational and business needs.
• Identify, communicate, share, and present operational, performance, financial metrics, and best practices to staff, and leadership.
• Builds and inspires confidence, trust and collaboration through an atmosphere of cooperation with all internal and external partners and customers to assure timely processing, sterilization and distribution of instrumentation.

Supervision and Staff Management:

• Manages and oversees the reprocessing of instruments for Surgical Services and units outside the Operating Room (OR) environment (units, clinics, diagnostic areas, etc.).
• Responsible for staff human resource management, onboarding, performance planning and development, coaching, and discipline.
• Responsible for ensuring that all sterile processing policies/procedures are current and practiced consistently.
• Develop and oversee procedures to recognize and incentivize staff excellence.
• Oversees educational programs for staff and leadership development.
• Oversees and ensures compliance and training for the Instrument Tracking System.
• Assures all storage areas and supplies are maintained in a neat, orderly, safe and clean environment.
• Assures the environment of care is clean, compliant with standards and has required air flow and air exchanges.
• Assigns other tasks to staff members and performs other tasks as the need dictates.

Compliance, Safety and Quality Programs:

• Responsible for compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements concerning the reprocessing of instrumentation.
• Oversees and assures the selection of the appropriate processing method used for each sterilized item is compliant with manufacturer's instructions for use (IFU).
• Responsible for the development and monitoring of all process improvement and quality indicators and managing these indicators to a high-performance level.
• Reviews and monitors Patient Safety Reporting Forms and other quality reports to ensure safe practices are in place and being followed.
• Maintains and fosters compliance with productivity and first-time quality indicators and criteria.
• Is responsible for the preparation and publishing of monthly statistical activity reports.
• Prepares regular reports for SDS committee and other committees as needed.
• Ensures proper collection and storage of all associated records for bacteriologic testing, cycle monitoring, and preventative maintenance.

Financial Responsibility and Fiscal Oversight:

• Responsible for sound fiscal management of the unit including managing to or exceeding forecast targets.
• Oversees capital and operational budgets.
• Assures unit and supervisory staffing models are reviewed and adjusted accordingly.
• Develops standard work practices, to ensure the work environment is conducive to a high level of productivity, safety and efficiency.

Required Qualifications*

• Bachelor's degree in the Health Care related field, Administration, Business, Education, Nursing, Sciences, or other related field. May consider work experience in lieu of degree.
• A minimum of five years of experience working in a Central Sterile Processing or Surgical Services Department, with at least 3 years of supervisory and/or manager experience.
• A thorough knowledge of asepsis, surgical instruments, patient care equipment, sterilization, and decontamination.
• Current certification through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) is preferred, otherwise certification must be obtained within one year of placement.
• Competent in the use of Word, Excel and other computer software applications.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills, critical thinking and customer service skills.

Desired Qualifications*

• Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) or Certified in Sterile Processing Management (CSPM) certification through HSPA and/or CBSPD.
• Three or more years of manager experience in Sterile Processing
• Experience working with a unionized workforce
• Experience managing High-Level Disinfection (HLD) processes
• Experience with progressive improvements in staff utilization, workflow, budget management, Lean/Toyota method training, administrative and teaching duties.
• Operating Room or similar experience.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time, Monday- Friday 7am-3:30pm position covering Brighton Center for Specialty Care, East Ann Arbor, West Ann Arbor, Northville, Kellogg Eye Center, KEC Grand Blanc, and Ypsilanti. . Hours may flex depending on operational needs. On-call availability on Saturdays.
