Description of Job

Mental Health Trainer:
This position provides clinical training, coaching, and mentoring to new and existing CDOC mental health treatment staff and arrange on-going professional development training for existing mental health treatment staff. Job duties include, but are not limited to:

• Support program evaluation to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of mental health services;
• Assist clinical administration with recruitment and retention activities for mental health staff.
• Maintain inventory of mental health testing resources and ensure the use of empirically supported psychological assessments.
• Provide training to DOC correctional staff and outside agencies as needed.
• Ensure empirically supported continuity of service delivery by training, observing, coaching; and promoting continuity of DOC services with community mental health services.
• Support Mental Health Program Administrator in clinical supervision of mental health work units; support Regional Health Services Administrators (RHSAs) in the operational supervision of mental health services, and support the implementation of system-wide programs for mental health target populations.
• Assists in the coordination of offenders needing special needs placements such as a Residential Treatment Program (RTP) and infirmary admissions.
• Ensure new staff receive mental health training during the first 60 days of employment and establishes work standards;
• Provides continuous mentoring of new staff to review progress, establishing work flow;
• Assess staff proposals and qualifications to provide training; establish written training protocols in coordination with the DOC training academy and Mental Health Program Administrator;
• Ensure mental health training is recorded; and updates and revises lesson plans for Mental Health Program Administrator approval.
• Participate in direct care, individual and group therapies to mentor, coach, and role model.
• Assists in the coordination of offenders needing special needs placements such as Residential Treatment Program (RTP) and infirmary admissions.
• When the Mental Health Program Administrator is unavailable, consults with on-call clinicians and supervisors as indicated by AR 650-04 and AR 700-29 as needed including after hours.

Minimum Qualifications

• Applicant must possess one or more of the following valid, active license from the State of Colorado;
  • Licensed Professional Counselor
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  • Licensed Psychologist or
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
• AND
• Applicant must have one (1) year of licensed or license candidacy experience, with current valid licensure from the State of Colorado, to include Licensed Social Worker (LSW), Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate (LPCC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker Candidate (SWC) or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Candidate, and experience must be with the mental health and/or sex offender population.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

• Applicant must have two (2) years experience in correctional mental health services

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• Ability to read and comprehend the English language;
• Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing;
• Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind;
• Excellent interpersonal skills;

Preferred Qualifications:

• Mental health counseling with the inmate population and crisis intervention experience;
• Experience conducting suicide risk assessments;
• Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
