Job Description

Involves the determination of risk factors for hereditary diseases and disorders in patients. Provides information to other healthcare providers or to individuals and families concerned with the risk of inherited conditions. Advises individuals and families to support informed decision making and coping methods for those at risk. Conducts research related to genetic conditions or genetic counseling.

Supervises Genetic Counselors responsible for patient evaluation, genetic testing, and patient counseling. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the processes by which to attain them.

Prepares clients for disclosure of results. Provides short term supportive counseling and facilitates informed decision making. Oversees and coordinates collection and analysis of pertinent medical records and ongoing case management. 5 Evaluates subordinate staff and participates in decision-making on hiring, salary actions, terminations, performance ratings, and other human resources matters5 Pursues professional development and facilitates access for subordinate staff to ongoing training, development, and educational opportunities in all relevant specialties and categories of care5 Ensures that all relevant licenses and certifications are current and properly documented

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and to manage the complex workflow and competing priorities involved with providing quality care as a genetic counselor
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment
• Solid organizational and customer service skills to structure unit operations and lead assigned staff in an efficient and effective manner
• Interpersonal skills to work collaboratively, coordinate and integrate with others throughout the organization
• Solid verbal and written communication skills to explain technical genetic concepts and communicate sensitive information to patients and families

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of relevant medical center, HR and UC policies and processes. Knowledge of relevant federal, state and local laws and regulations
• Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document staff issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters
• Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software
• Solid knowledge of organization's genetic counseling application programs to troubleshoot issues and recommend improvements in convenience and efficiency
• 1 year supervisory or managerial experience

Education, Licenses and Certifications:

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
• Masters' Degree in clinical genetic counseling
• Minimum of 3 years of recent experience in Cardiovascular genetic counseling
• Current California Genetic Counseling License
• Board certified by American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics

Salary Information

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
