The Department of Critical Care Medicine, Division of Cardiac Critical Care at the Hospital for Sick Children is inviting applications for the position of full-time Cardiac Intensivist. The effective date of this appointment is February 1, 2027 (negotiable).

Primary Description

We are looking for a candidate with an interest and drive to push forward the field of pediatric cardiac ICU. The candidate must hold an MD, MBBS or equivalent, must be able to function proficiently in English and must have training and extensive clinical experience in pediatric cardiac critical care. Responsibilities include full-time equivalent clinical pediatric cardiac critical care practice, research, education, and administrative responsibilities as required by a Staff Physician in the Department of Critical Care Medicine. Evidence of excellence in teaching and research or other scholarly work is required. Diverse trajectories of academic focus are welcome. Expertise in Quality Improvement (particularly with registry experience), Global Health, or Pulmonary Hypertension would be an asset but is not required. Preference will be given to mid-senior career cardiac intensivists, particularly those with experience in large-volume cardiac programs.

Clinical responsibilities include serving as the Most Responsible Physician for critically ill children admitted to the CCCU. This includes responsibility for all management decisions, assessments, engagement, and consultations with other clinicians involved in the care of patients admitted to the unit. The successful candidate will perform procedures as required while caring for critically ill children admitted to the CCCU. Responsibilities also include providing advice to referring physicians from SickKids catchment areas who contact CritiCall for support in caring for critically ill children at their hospitals. This includes providing management recommendations and coordinating with Acute Care Transport Service (ACTS) clinicians to retrieve patients and transport them to SickKids. The successful candidate will also provide an in-hospital consultation service to assist in the care of acutely unwell children admitted to SickKids through the Cardiology Consult Service. Additional responsibilities may include participation in collaborative teams within the Labatt Family Heart Centre, depending on interests, experience, and qualifications.

Additional Description

The successful candidate must be committed to a career as an academic clinician. The candidate must be eligible for academic appointment at the University of Toronto. The candidate must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Medical staff appointments in the Department and at The Hospital for Sick Children are aligned with faculty classifications at the University of Toronto and as specified by the Toronto Academic Health Science Network (TAHSN). There is an opportunity for a Medical Director role contingent upon demonstrated interests and qualifications.

Hospital/Division Description

Dedicated exclusively to children and their families, SickKids is a world-renowned, state-of-the-art pediatric health care facility affiliated with the University of Toronto. The hospital is committed to ongoing learning and development and features a caring and supportive work environment. The Division of Cardiac Critical Care is currently comprised of nine physicians and is responsible for the comprehensive care of all patients admitted to the Cardiac Critical Care Unit, including those requiring mechanical circulatory support.

Remuneration will range from $298,110 to $425,880 per year (at time of writing) based on a 35-hour work week plus on-call responsibilities, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Periodic billing overage distributions may be received in addition to base salary. Support for relocation expenses will be provided.
