About the Capital Accountant Position

The Capital Accountant supports Colonial Pipeline's capital project and fixed asset accounting processes by maintaining accurate records for Property, Plant, and Equipment in accordance with IFRS, GAAP, and FERC requirements. This role partners with Finance, Operations, Technology, audit teams, and the Project Management Office to support financial close, reconciliations, reporting, controls, audits, and process improvement initiatives.

  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in accordance with the established month-end close calendar.
  • Assist in preparing fixed asset transactions, including software and subscription amortization, lease accounting, depreciation expenses, capitalized interest, and project-related journal entries.
  • Help execute key acquire-to-retire controls to mitigate risk.
  • Partner with internal and external audit teams to provide documented control evidence.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations in accordance with established timelines.
  • Prepare reimbursable invoices with guidance from the Manager, Capital Accounting, ensuring accuracy and compliance with contractual terms.
  • Support quarterly financial reviews and the annual financial statement audit by preparing and updating schedules and gathering requested documentation in a timely manner.
  • Assist with internal audit, external audit, and other ad hoc reporting requests as directed.
  • Support process improvement and automation initiatives as needed.
  • Assist with process and application modifications that impact accounting for capital projects, including design and testing.
  • Support the business in emergency response efforts when required, including training, short-term travel, and backfill duties.


What You Bring to the Table
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
  • Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience, including general ledger accounting, journal entries, account reconciliations, financial close activities, and use of large-scale ERP or financial reporting systems.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, fixed asset accounting, capital versus expense classification, depreciation, amortization, accruals, reconciliations, and journal entry preparation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including intermediate to advanced Excel skills for data analysis, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Ability to work effectively with ERP and financial reporting systems, large data sets, and system-generated reports.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to accuracy, completeness, and deadlines.
  • Ability to interpret accounting guidance, contractual terms, project documentation, and supporting schedules.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to coordinate with Finance, Operations, Technology, audit teams, and project stakeholders.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, support internal controls, and prepare clear documentation for audit and compliance purposes.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities during month-end, quarter-end, year-end close, audit cycles, and other time-sensitive deliverables.


Skills That Set You Apart
  • Experience with fixed asset accounting, capital project accounting, depreciation, capital versus expense analysis, and project-related accounting transactions.
  • Combination of public accounting and corporate accounting experience.
  • Experience supporting Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, internal controls, audit requests, and documentation in a public company accounting environment.
  • Working knowledge of IFRS and FERC accounting requirements.
  • Strong Excel capabilities for data analysis, reconciliations, reporting, and working with large data sets.
  • Experience supporting process improvement, automation, system design, testing, or application modifications that impact accounting processes.
