Job Description

The Business Unit Controller, Transportation is the lead finance professional supporting a specialized transportation and freight-related business unit within a larger North American organization. This role is responsible for overseeing all financial, accounting, operational reporting, and business performance activities for the business unit while partnering closely with operational leadership.

The position combines hands-on accounting ownership with operational finance, profitability analysis, cost control, internal reporting, forecasting, and process improvement responsibilities. The successful candidate will provide financial leadership to support growth, operational discipline, and improved decision-making within the transportation business.

Job Responsibilities
  • Lead all accounting and finance activities for the transportation business unit.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, variance analysis, and operational performance reporting.
  • Analyze transportation profitability, customer margins, lane profitability, and operating costs.
  • Oversee revenue recognition, accruals, intercompany transactions, and month-end close activities.
  • Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
  • Partner with operational leadership on pricing, customer profitability, and cost optimization initiatives.
  • Monitor key transportation KPIs including freight costs, margins, utilization, and service performance.
  • Manage internal reporting and financial support for corporate finance leadership.
  • Coordinate with Business Services and Corporate teams including AP, payroll, treasury, tax, and IT.
  • Support audit requests and maintain compliance with internal controls and accounting policies.
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting automation, and operational visibility.
  • Provide day-to-day oversight and guidance to the business unit accounting support employee.
  • Help establish process discipline, accountability, and reporting consistency.
  • Act as the primary finance business partner for transportation operations leadership.
