Full Job Description

Gen Re currently offers an excellent opportunity for a Business Unit Actuary to work in our Stamford office. This is a hybrid role with 3 days in the office. Remote work arrangements may be considered for appropriately qualified candidates.

Role Description

The Business Unit Actuary will be responsible for leading IBNR reserve analyses for assigned P&C reinsurance lines, including assumption selection, documentation, communication of results, and support for financial, (GAAP and statutory), and management reporting. The role will require regular interaction with underwriting, claims, finance, IT, audit, and management stakeholders, and will include responsibilities for reserving process improvements, actuarial systems, data validation, and special studies.

The following are the primary accountabilities of the position:
  • Lead reserving analyses for assigned P&C reinsurance lines, including IBNR estimation, reserve reviews, experience analysis, assumption selection, documentation, and communication of results to underwriting, claims, finance, and management.
  • Provide key contributions to reserving system and process improvement initiatives, including involvement in corporate initiatives such as financial and accounting system development.
  • Lead the design, development, and ongoing enhancement of reserving dashboards used to monitor key actuarial metrics, including IBNR, loss development, Actual vs. Expected, selected and indicated loss ratios, ultimate loss estimates, premium trends, and reserve movements across assigned lines of business.
  • Provide technical and analytical leadership through advanced use of Excel, Access, SQL, Power BI, VBA, R/Python, and other tools to improve actuarial processes, reporting, automation, and analysis. This includes the application of emerging AI technologies.
  • Partner with IT, Finance, Internal Audit, external auditors, and business stakeholders to resolve data quality issues, support audit/control requirements, and ensure reserving processes are accurate, repeatable, and well-documented.

Role Qualifications and Experience
  • University degree is required. Prefer a major course of study in actuarial science, statistics or mathematics.
  • Five or more years actuarial P&C experience in insurance or reinsurance. Reserving experience is a plus.
  • ACAS or FCAS designation is preferred.
  • Fluency in Excel, Access, Power BI, etc. SQL, VBA, and R/Python knowledge highly desirable.


Salary Range
155,000.00 - 260,000.00 USD
Base payis one component of our total compensation package. In addition to base salary,employees may be eligible for benefits including medical, dental, and visioncoverage, a retirement plan, paid time off, sick leave, holidays, and bonus orincentive compensation, where applicable. The actual rate of pay offered willdepend on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, skills,experience, education, certifications, geographic location, and business needs.The compensation range listed reflects the range the Company reasonably expectsto pay for this position at the time of posting.
