Full Job Description
NBBJ is seeking a Building Code Specialist/Project Architect to join our team. We are seeking a talented professional who has worked on a variety of project types and sizes. Extensive knowledge of building codes is required. Healthcare and California experience is highly desirable. The Building Code Specialist portion of this role involves providing support to project teams across the U.S. The Project Architect role involves architectural design and delivery for complex projects, involving the construction of new buildings and the alteration of existing buildings and facilities.

The Building Code Specialist / Project Architect will be part of NBBJ's Studio N, a firmwide studio that is built with thought leaders and experts from across the firm, brought together as an interdisciplinary team. This opportunity is available to candidates based in one of our NBBJ office locations: Los Angeles, New York, or Seattle.

In your new role, you will:

Building Code Specialist:
  • Support project teams across the U.S. by providing building code guidance and helping resolve code questions and issues with code officials
  • Produce detailed code analyses
  • Stay current on code issues, risks, and resolutions
  • Perform QC reviews of project documents
  • Produce continuing education presentations on building code and accessibility

Project Architect:
  • Interpret design concepts by collaborating with project team and translate them into workable construction systems and detailing, while maintaining design intent and advocating for design excellence.
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate documentation and deliverables from schematic design through construction administration in accordance with established firm and industry standards.
  • Lead and coordinate the work of other team members and consultants, providing direction, guidance, and mentoring as appropriate.
  • May participate in marketing efforts, including proposal development, presentations, and client interviews.

What you will need to succeed:
  • 15-20+ years of experience in the architectural field with successful experience in the documentation and delivery of large-scale projects
  • Bachelors of Architecture or Masters of Architecture degree
  • Architectural Licensure
  • LEED or other sustainability accreditation preferred.
  • Engagement with local and/or national code councils or other related organizations such as International Code Council.
  • Proven ability to work within a highly collaborative team environment
  • Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail
  • Interest and ability to mentor others; setting a positive example for others
  • Ability to travel as the project(s) requires


The annual base pay range for this role is anticipated to be between $130,000 and $150,000. Actual compensation for successful candidates will be carefully determined based on a number of factors, including their skills, qualifications and experience.
