Biomedical Informatics Specialist - SME Level III

Position is contingent upon award.

Responsibilities of the Biomedical Informatics Specialist - SME Level III
  • The Biomedical Informatics Specialist III plays a critical role in the analysis, design, integration, and management of biomedical information systems and terminology products.
  • This position leads high-level functional systems work, provides expert oversight of biomedical content development, and ensures adherence to best practices in terminology standards and ontology design.
  • The Specialist serves as a senior project lead, subject matter expert, and liaison with stakeholders and clients, supporting complex biomedical informatics initiatives such as the development and maintenance of the NCI Thesaurus and NCI Metathesaurus.


Project Requirements:
  • Proven expertise in content development for reputable biomedical terminology or ontology products.
  • Deep understanding of major biomedical terminology standards, classifications, and nomenclature systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of terminology/ontology development practices and tools.
  • Familiarity and demonstrated competence with specialized software used to develop and maintain the NCI Thesaurus and Metathesaurus is highly desirable.
  • Must be expert users of relevant terminology development software tools and must provide training for other contractor staff as required.
  • Lead and direct teams engaged in high-level biomedical functional systems analysis, integration, and documentation.
  • Serve as project lead and senior specialist for assigned content domains or development projects.
  • Act as a primary liaison with clients and stakeholders, ensuring project requirements and standards are met.
  • Provide expert oversight and training in terminology development software and best practices.
  • Maintain and enhance domain-specific biomedical information systems content, ensuring alignment with evolving industry standards and practices.


Skills and Qualifications:
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the individual's field of study and specialization.
  • Demonstrated experience with terminology creation and modeling, data standards, and best practices for terminology management is preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience in biomedical or scientific terminology systems design, development, and management.


Educational Requirements:
  • A PhD plus 10 year's relevant experience or master's degree plus 20 years relevant experience is required.
  • For senior specialists on select assignments, an MD, DO, PhD, or PharmD with at least five (5) additional years in biomedical information systems content design and management is strongly preferred.
  • For Sr. Biomedical Informatics Specialists specializing in pathology, an MD or DO with specialization in pathology and a minimum of five (5) years of clinical or academic pathology experience is required; oncopathology experience is strongly preferred.


Educational Equivalents:

A master's degree plus 20 years' experience may be used as an equivalent to a PhD.
