BIM MANAGER

POSITION SUMMARY

The BIM Manager is responsible for leading and managing the company's Building Information Modeling (BIM) function in support of all company projects from preconstruction through project closeout. This position provides both technical and departmental leadership, ensuring BIM deliverables are accurate, timely, constructible, coordinated, and aligned with project requirements, field operations, prefabrication, and company standards.

The BIM Manager is accountable for the development, coordination, quality, and execution of BIM models and related deliverables across assigned projects. This role works collaboratively with Project Management, Field Operations, Estimating, Prefabrication, and other departments to ensure BIM is effectively supporting project execution, productivity, and field installation.

As a people leader, the BIM Manager is responsible for the direction, development, workload management, and performance of BIM team members, including direct reports. The BIM Manager is expected to establish clear expectations, provide timely feedback, develop technical proficiency within the team, and build a department capable of operating efficiently and independently.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

BIM Leadership & Department Management
  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the BIM department and provide direction, priorities, and expectations to BIM team members.
  • Directly supervise assigned BIM employees, including workload allocation, coaching, development, performance management, and accountability for results.
  • Establish clear project priorities and ensure BIM resources are appropriately allocated based on project schedules, field needs, and company priorities.
  • Monitor department workload, project deadlines, and deliverables and proactively address resource constraints, scheduling conflicts, or performance concerns.
  • Develop team members to increase technical proficiency, problem-solving capabilities, accountability, and independence.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings and provide ongoing performance feedback to direct reports.
  • Establish, maintain, communicate, and enforce company-wide BIM standards, processes, procedures, naming conventions, templates, and quality expectations.
  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for BIM department performance, quality, responsiveness, and execution.

BIM Production & Project Coordination
  • Translate contract documents, 2D drawings, specifications, and project requirements into coordinated 3D/4D/5D models supporting electrical construction.
  • Develop and oversee accurate construction drawings, coordination drawings, fabrication and prefabrication documents, installation drawings, spool drawings, and as-built documentation.
  • Perform and oversee clash detection, coordination, constructability reviews, and resolution of design conflicts.
  • Ensure models and BIM deliverables comply with project specifications, applicable codes, company standards, and established quality requirements.
  • Review BIM team deliverables for completeness, accuracy, constructability, fabrication readiness, and field usability.
  • Coordinate multiple BIM projects simultaneously while maintaining established schedules and deliverable commitments.
  • Identify potential design, coordination, constructability, or installation issues early and work collaboratively with project teams to resolve them before they negatively impact field production.
  • Support quantity extraction, prefabrication opportunities, installation planning, and other uses of BIM that improve project productivity and efficiency.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, General Foremen, Field Operations, Estimating, Prefabrication, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and priorities.
  • Maintain regular communication with project teams regarding BIM progress, outstanding coordination items, schedule risks, and required decisions.
  • Participate in internal and external BIM/VDC coordination meetings as required.
  • Respond to project and field needs with an appropriate sense of urgency and ensure BIM-related issues are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Promote a collaborative, solutions-focused approach when resolving project challenges or disagreements.
  • Maintain professional and productive working relationships across departments and with external project partners.
  • Escalate significant project risks, resource constraints, schedule concerns, or unresolved coordination issues to appropriate leadership in a timely manner.

Technology, Standards & Continuous Improvement
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement BIM technologies, workflows, and processes that improve productivity, coordination, prefabrication, and field execution.
  • Drive adoption and consistent use of approved BIM tools and processes throughout the organization.
  • Develop and provide training related to BIM standards, processes, technology, and modeling tools.
  • Manage and coordinate BIM-related software licenses, technology requirements, and supporting hardware in partnership with appropriate internal resources.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging BIM/VDC technologies and industry best practices applicable to electrical construction.
  • Identify opportunities to improve BIM efficiency, standardization, quality, and value to project teams.
  • Develop measurable department goals and track performance against established expectations.

LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS

As a manager and people leader, the BIM Manager is expected to:
  • Set clear expectations and hold team members accountable for performance, quality, deadlines, and professional conduct.
  • Take ownership of department commitments and ensure assigned work is completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Communicate proactively regarding project status, workload, challenges, delays, and resource needs.
  • Address performance or workflow issues promptly rather than allowing issues to remain unresolved.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and a solutions-oriented approach when working through disagreements or challenges.
  • Collaborate effectively with other departments and support decisions and priorities established by company leadership.
  • Develop direct reports through coaching, training, delegation, and constructive feedback.
  • Lead by example in demonstrating the company's Core Values of Trust, Team, Grit, and Growth.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Electrical construction experience required.
  • Previous experience leading, supervising, mentoring, or developing BIM/VDC personnel strongly preferred.
  • Associate degree, technical degree, or certifications in CAD, BIM, 3D drafting, construction technology, or related field preferred.
  • Strong understanding of electrical construction methods, sequencing, coordination, prefabrication, and field installation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, competing priorities, and deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and sense of urgency when resolving production or project issues.
  • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated attention to detail and quality.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with field personnel, Project Management, Estimating, Prefabrication, leadership, and external project partners.
  • Strong presentation and training skills with the ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team while maintaining accountability for department performance and deliverables.
