The Benefits & Compensation Manager is responsible for the design, delivery, and ongoing optimization of total rewards programs, including compensation structures, benefits offerings, leave management, and related policies. This role acts as a trusted advisor in the space and partners closely with the accounting and finance team, benefits vendors/carriers, and HR management/leadership to ensure programs are competitive, compliant, cost-effective, and aligned to the organization's talent strategy and compensation philosophy. The position also maintains benefits broker and vendor relationships, analytics, communications, and continuous improvement of employee experience.
This position is a hybrid role, reporting to an office at least two days per week, and requires travel occasionally as business dictates.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Leads the planning and execution for market-based annual increases, entry rates for promotions, and pay equity standards (as applicable), including guidelines, manager tools, and audit/validation of outcomes.
- Assists with year-end incentive planning, variable compensation programs and special projects.
- Serves as the primary administrator for all leave programs; coordinates leave requests from initiation through return to work, ensures accurate recordkeeping and documentation, provides guidance to employees and managers, and maintains compliance with applicable leave laws and company policies.
- Serves as the subject matter expert for compensation and benefits data within HRIS and related systems; ensures data integrity, process efficiency, reporting accuracy, and system optimization.
- Acts as the primary point of contact for benefits carriers and the Mark Thomas workforce; fields employee benefits questions and assists with any issues.
- Assists the Director of HR and CFO with annual benefits renewal; presents recommendations and suggestions for benefits enhancements.
- Plans open enrollment end-to-end, including vendor coordination, communications strategy, employee education, and issue resolution; ensures EDI feeds are set correctly with carriers and open enrollment system.
- Maintains policies, controls, and documentation related to state and federal benefits and compensation regulations; works as a partner with HR Managers with appropriate regulation communications.
- Coordinates and administers all ADA accommodation requests and serves as the primary point of contact for employees, managers, and healthcare providers; manages the interactive process from initiation through resolution, ensuring compliance, timely communication, and appropriate documentation.
- Manages relationships and performance for brokers, benefit carriers, administrators, and compensation survey providers.
- Assists labor compliance with prevailing wage compensation changes and employee and candidate communication.
- Develops and maintains compensation reporting and analytics to monitor internal equity, market competitiveness, salary range penetration, promotion trends, and compensation program effectiveness
- Supports pay equity analyses, remediation planning, and pay transparency practices (including job postings and manager guidance) in alignment with company policy and local requirements.
- Advises HR & Recruiting partners and leaders on compensation decisions, offer letters, and employee inquiries; provides coaching and escalation support.
- Processes and reconciles carrier invoices each month; audits enrollments and EOI submissions against providers and enrollment systems and ensures separated employees are removed in a timely manner.
- Assists the HR Generalist with state and federal compensation and benefits compliance reporting.
- Performs administrative tasks as needed/assigned in support of benefits and compensation programs or the greater HR team.
QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor's degree in human resources, business, finance, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- 8-10+ years of progressive experience in total rewards, compensation, and/or benefits, including program ownership.
- Experience working in a professional services environment highly desired.
- Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Certified Benefits Professional (CBP), SHRM-CP/SCP, or PHR certification preferred.
- Demonstrated experience leading annual compensation research and administration (market adjustments, promotion, bonus and/or equity planning, etc.).
- Proficient with compensation survey tools and job evaluation methodologies (e.g., Mercer/IPE, Radford, Willis Towers Watson).
- Experience with pay equity analyses and pay transparency implementation.
- Strong/expert-level knowledge of benefits administration and vendor management (health & welfare and retirement plans).
- Advanced knowledge of relevant federal and state-specific benefits, leave, and compensation compliance requirements.
- Experience supporting multi-state and coordinating region-specific total rewards practices.
- Advanced analytical skills, including proficiency with Excel; ability to translate data into clear recommendations for leaders.
- Experience partnering with HRIS/benefits and compensation platforms and maintaining data integrity across systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain complex topics to diverse audiences.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
- Ability to travel as business dictates.
