Full Job Description
Program Overview: The Extended Day Program (EDP) is an award-winning afterschool academic enrichment program serving over 1,000+ students at 8 schools, Alvarado ES, Bessie Carmichael K-8, Cleveland ES, Flynn ES, Everett Middle School, Marshall ES, Sanchez ES, and Thomas Edison Charter Academy. The mission of the San Francisco Beacon Initiative is to transform public schools into youth, family and community centers. Drawing on the existing strengths of our students, schools and communities, Beacon Centers are committed to a cohesive, comprehensive and collaborative approach that creates pathways to lifelong learning. This position will be building and heading up the Everett Beacon team.

Position Summary: The position of Beacon Director is a critical, visible position requiring exceptional leadership, strong management experience and a successful track record of working with government contracts and nonprofit organizations providing direct service. The Director should be highly flexible in dealing with the challenges of developing new programs and working to meet the needs of the community. The Director should have experience with community-based services for youth, children and families, including working with participants in school based programs. The Director should have proven ability to manage a professional staff and interact with the community. S/he must be a hands-on strategic thinker, a planner and problem solver, prepared to lead and direct staff through change and program development. Excellent communication skills are critical. The Director must be comfortable communicating with the people who receive services and their families, and equally comfortable in training staff, presenting before elected officials, public agency administrators and members of the community.

Key Responsibilities & Primary Duties

Program management & evaluation
  • Provide vision, strategic leadership and development of Extended Day Program to ensure quality youth development academic & enrichment programming, ensure program aligns with the goals of Mission Graduates AND the goals of Everett Beacon Program.
  • Create program goals, objectives, outcomes and evaluation instruments before the start of each school year in collaboration with the school site and the Assistant Beacon Director. Goals and outcomes will be defined by using data from DCYF Youth Program Quality Assessment and ExCEL Quality Action Plan.
  • Ensure the development of content and lesson plans that build students' literacy, English Language Development, academic, and SEL skills.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer, develop and manage the annual program budget.
  • Maintain knowledge of and ensure full compliance with ExCEL and DCYF policies and procedures.
  • Oversee maintenance of all program records.


Successful goal completion & participant outcomes
  • Ensure SFUSD's contracted Average Daily Attendance for the school year and summer programs.
  • Oversee program evaluation and the utilization of evaluation findings in program development to ensure positive outcomes.
  • Assist in the preparation of funding proposals and reports to funders. This includes a narrative to report back to DCYF on a monthly basis.
  • Create and submit contracts needed in order to work with other Community-Based Organizations (CBO's).


Supervise staff, consultants & volunteers
  • Hire, train, and supervise staff. This includes meeting on a weekly basis with the Assistant Beacon Director to oversee and continue programmatic and staff development. This also includes being on site to support the Assistant Beacon Director with any programmatic needs.
  • Work with each staff member to create annual work plans and Professional Development Plans and monitor at regular intervals. This includes evaluating staff twice per year and submit final evaluations to both staff and Human Resources.
  • In collaboration with other MG team members, oversee recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers and program consultants.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of the education and youth development fields.


Collaborate with community partners, including parents & SFUSD
  • Act as primary liaison and collaborate closely with the principal and administrative staff Everett Middle School, as well as the ExCEL Department Staff.
  • Meet monthly with the Community School Coordinator, Academic Liaison and/or School Administration to coordinate program design, discuss evaluation and explore ways to achieve school wide goals, including school climate culture and family engagement.
  • In collaboration with MG's Parent Partner Program Director, develop parent engagement activities and maintain positive parent relations.
  • Actively participate in school site teams, such as SAP, CARE, School Site Council, Family Engagement Team
  • Attend monthly ExCEL and Beacon meetings to properly inform staff of ongoing programmatic changes.


Member of the Extended Day Program Leadership Team
  • Align programs models and structures across all Extended Day Program sites.
  • Develop academic and enrichment/elective content that can be utilized across sites.
  • Collaborate on Trainings and Professional Development for all Extended Day Program Staff.
  • Fulfills organizational duties as they arise including participating in staff meetings, special committees, event planning and implementation.
  • Participation in staff trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • 4 years of proven experience and ability in working in education and/or youth programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with the best practices in youth development program planning, curriculum development, methods of teaching, and evaluation.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English fluency required.
  • BA or BS required.
  • Current CPR certification (or attained within 2 months of employment).
  • TB test clearance mandatory prior to hire.
  • Experience working in communities of color with low-income populations.
  • Some weekends and evenings required
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.


$85,000 - $90,000 a year

Benefits Package: includes fully paid Medical, Dental and Vision; access to Pre-Tax Commuter Benefits, as well as access to 403(b) account at time of hire. We also offer an employer contribution for eligible staff* (eligibility to be explained at time of hire). In addition, we offer 13 paid holidays per year, as well as 8 personal hours per year and accrue PTO. Accrual rates depend on length of employment with Mission Graduates.
