Position Overview:

As a Base Engine Technical Design Specialist, you will serve as a senior technical authority within the Base Engine Design group. This role combines direct ownership of assigned engine components (responsible for planning, design, development, execution, and production release) with a broader responsibility to provide system-level guidance and technical judgment across the base engine team.

Essential Functions:

Component Design:
  • Serve as the design owner for assigned base engine components and subsystems, from concept through production release.
  • Typical component responsibility may include cylinder heads, valvetrain, combustion system elements, crankshafts, connecting rods, pistons, bearings, and balance systems.
  • Lead detailed planning, mechanical design, analysis, and production release activities to meet challenging requirements.
  • Utilize CAE to guide and interpret design decisions.
  • Author and maintain component-level design specifications.
  • Develop and execute Design Validation Plans (DVPs) for assigned hardware.
  • Work closely with Analysis, Thermodynamics, Mechanical Development, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, and Suppliers.
  • Lead fast paced, complex mechanical design projects with high technical difficulty and business impact.
  • Design and interpret cost-effective experiments to reduce technical risk.
  • Challenge legacy solutions and introduce innovative, manufacturable designs.
  • Generate patentable ideas leading to commercial success.


System-Level Technical Leadership (As Needed):
  • Act as a trusted subject-matter expert for overall base engine architecture, system behavior, and integration.
  • Provide engineering recommendations on system-level tradeoffs involving performance, durability, NVH, weight, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Participate in design reviews, issue resolution, and root-cause investigations crossing component boundaries.
  • Mentor and technically guide team members.
  • Help define and reinforce best practices and technical standards.


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in internal combustion engine design.
  • Demonstrated ownership of critical base engine components.
  • Broad understanding of overall engine system behavior.
  • Proven ability to define and execute comprehensive DVPs.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including casting, forging, machining, heat treatment, grinding, balancing, and assembly.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Proficiency with Creo / ProE.
  • Experience applying DFSS tools.
  • Recognized technical leader within prior organizations.


The hiring range for this position is $118,400 - $174,000 annually. The actual base pay offered will vary based on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the specifics of the candidate's qualifications and the business context.

In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
