The Opportunity

The AVP, Technology Observability Platforms is responsible for defining and executing USAA's observability strategy and operating model, ensuring technology services are measurable, reliable, secure, and operationally transparent. This leader owns the observability platforms, event management capabilities, operational intelligence and frameworks that enable proactive detection, diagnosis, and resolution of technology issues across the association.

This leader is accountable for improving service availability, expanding detection coverage, improving alert quality, accelerating platform adoption, increasing operational efficiency, and enhancing engineering productivity. Through strategic leadership, platform innovation, automation, and cross-functional partnerships, this role enables technology teams to deliver reliable and resilient experiences for members and employees.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in San Antonio, TX.

What you'll do:
  • Drive the adoption of observability standards, tooling and instrumentation practices across the technology organization.
  • Establish observability capabilities that enable the early detection and prevention of service degradation, reducing both customer and business impact.
  • Execute strategic partnerships with Infrastructure Engineering, Cybersecurity, Application Development leaders and technology venders to improve availability and resiliency of business-critical services.
  • Drive measurable improvements in incident quality and operational responsiveness ensuring observability capabilities support rapid identification of service disruptions, performance degradation, and emerging operational risks.
  • Serve as the senior observability authority for the enterprise, influencing technology strategy, architecture decisions, and operational excellence initiatives.
  • Champion a culture of reliability engineering, observability-by-design, automation, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish alert standards that ensure actionable, prioritized and context-rich notifications for operational teams.
  • Create self-service observability capabilities that accelerate engineering onboarding and reduce operational friction.
  • Establish operational intelligence capabilities that transform data into actionable insights for engineering, operations, cybersecurity and executive leadership.
  • Measure and improve developer and engineer productivity through automation, standardized telemetry frameworks, and reusable platform capabilities.
  • Develop enterprise-level dashboards, reporting frameworks, and health indicators that provide visibility into reliability, resiliency, operational risk, and technology performance.
  • Builds and oversees a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.


What you have:
  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
  • 10+ years of progressive technology leadership experience in observability, site reliability engineering, operations engineering, technology infrastructure, or related disciplines.
  • 6 years of people leadership experience in building, managing and/or developing high-performing teams.
  • Proven success establishing enterprise observability programs and operating models within complex, highly regulated environments
  • Deep understanding of telemetry architectures, including metrics, logs, traces, events, synthetic monitoring, digital experience monitoring, and operational analytics.
  • Experience leading technology transformation initiatives focused on reliability, resiliency, operational excellence, and engineering productivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior executives and drive cross-functional adoption of enterprise technology standards.
  • Advanced experience developing outcome-based metrics and executive scorecards tied to operational performance and business value.

The salary range for this position is: $195,230.00 - $351,410.00.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.

Long Term Incentive Plan: Cash payment for Executive level roles only, representing a cash payment which is both time and performance based.
