Full Job Description
Project/Unit Description

The Automated Test Engineer develops testing solutions for complex software and system frameworks including unit tests, software-in-the-loop regression tests, hardware-in-the-loop testing, continuous integration (CI) tests, and helps develop system and test requirements for sufficient test coverage and reports status to internal and external stakeholders. Test scripts and automation software will operate within the existing software frameworks and languages, typically C++, C#, Bash, and Python, and operating systems, Linux and Windows, and is expected to require custom infrastructure development potentially interfacing with hardware for control of external devices. The type of systems that will be tested include robot autonomy software using ROS and Docker, as well as front-end and back-end software for ground station user interfaces and communication protocols.

Job Purpose

The Automated Test Engineer develops automated testing solutions for simple to complex systems, including mixed environments incorporating hardware-in-the-loop testing. The Automated Test Engineer also develops and enhances automation frameworks, builds testing routines, and designs scripts that operate within those frameworks. The Automated Test Engineer gains understanding of a target platform so they can devise the optimal testing approach and configurations, constructs automation which continuously identifies issues or errors, and directs developers to research likely or potential causes of found issues. In summary, the Automated Test Engineer performs the role of a test engineer with additional responsibilities including software development, integration, and debugging of system outputs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Apply system engineering and test engineering principles to establish automated test infrastructures required to validate and verify product requirements.
  • Develop software scripts to implement User Interface (UI) testing, and/or system testing.
  • Convert manual test procedures into automated test procedures using automated test infrastructure.
  • Contribute to technical reports and presentations

Additional Responsibilities
  • Apply an understanding of MIL-STD-882E to categorize in-development software features and fixes and report identified safety items to stakeholders

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with some of the following items...
    • C++ and C#.
    • Developing for Linux and Windows.
    • Common frameworks for UI and visualization.
    • Developing and testing complex full stack software, specifically analyzing full system behavior against expectations and sub-component behavior.
    • Gitlab, and Gitlab CI.
    • Conventional computing hardware and embedded systems.
    • Test and analysis frameworks, scripting, and test tracking workflows, such as Google Test and Python file parsing, data analysis, and plotting tools.
    • Algorithms and/or concepts for analysis of vehicle trajectory and state comparison with expected or prior test runs for equivalence or anomaly detection.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Experience with a majority of the items listed in Minimum Qualifications.
  • Experience designing test autonomy frameworks, and evaluating alternative design choices, and developing a project plan to convey and then implement that design.
  • Experience running a testing team and reporting status to project leads.
  • Experience generating test requirements given vague or incomplete customer direction, with the direction of engineers and developers building new capabilities.
  • Experience with fielded robotics, operational vehicles, or related systems.

Travel Requirements
  • 10% - 25% travel.

About Georgia Tech

The Georgia Institute of Technology, commonly referred to as Georgia Tech or, in the state of Georgia, as Tech, is a public research university and institute of technology in Atlanta, Georgia. It is part of the University System of Georgia and has satellite campuses in Savannah, Georgia; Metz, France; Athlone, Ireland; Shenzhen, China; and Singapore. The school was founded in 1885 as the Georgia School of Technology as part of Reconstruction plans to build an industrial economy in the post-Civil War Southern United States. Initially, it offered only a degree in mechanical engineering. By 1901, its curriculum had expanded to include electrical, civil, and chemical engineering. In 1948, the school changed its name to reflect its evolution from a trade school to a larger and more capable technical institute and research university. Today, Georgia Tech is organized into six colleges and contains about 31 departments/units, with emphasis on science and technology. It is well recognized for its degree programs in computer science, engineering, and business. Student athletics, both organized and intramural, are a part of student and alumni life. The school's intercollegiate competitive sports teams, the four-time football national champion Yellow Jackets, and the nationally recognized fight song "Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech", have helped keep Georgia Tech in the national spotlight. Georgia Tech fields eight men's and seven women's teams that compete in the NCAA Division I athletics and the Football Bowl Subdivision. Georgia Tech is a member of the Coastal Division in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
