Job Description

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking an Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) Experiment System Engineer to support the development of advanced nuclear energy systems and experimental infrastructure critical to the nation's energy future. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located at our ATR facility with every Friday off.

In this role, you will collaborate with experiment teams to define experiment requirements and ensure system operability is maintained to support experiment needs. You will evaluate, maintain, modify, and test facility and process support systems to sustain operational readiness and initiate corrective actions when necessary. Your responsibilities include developing and implementing procedures for facility and equipment operations, analyzing incidents to inform preventive measures, and directing activities to ensure efficiency and adherence to safety standards. Additionally, you will maintain configuration management and technical baselines, develop loop chemistry requirements, and provide ongoing support to operations, maintenance, and project personnel to ensure systems meet both operational and research objectives.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Provide support to Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) experiment representatives to ensure experiment readiness.
  • Evaluate, maintain, modify, and test facility systems and process support systems to ensure continued operational readiness.
  • Initiate corrective actions.
  • Develop experiment specific safety requirements and ensure requirements are properly implemented into procedures and other work control documents.
  • Direct operating or maintenance activities to ensure efficiency and conformity to safety standards.
  • Develop and maintain configuration management and the technical baseline of multiple systems and component groups.
  • Develop and modify loop chemistry requirements.
  • Perform experiment safety analysis to demonstrate that NSUF experiments comply with all applicable nuclear safety requirements.
  • Support facility operations, maintenance personnel, and experiment representatives to ensure systems and equipment meet operational and research needs.


Required:
  • Level 2: Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree in Engineering. All degrees must be from a program accredited by ABET.
  • Level 3: Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 5 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience. All degrees must be from a program accredited by ABET.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.


The Ideal Candidate Will Possess:
  • National Laboratory engineering experience.
  • Nuclear Safety experience.
  • Familiarity with ATR experiment processes.


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds without assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required. Job Information:
  • The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($79,344 - $162,732) / Level 3 ($95,256 - $195,288). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
