Assistant Director of Patient Care (RN) Of Mental Health Open Unit - RWJBarnabas Health

Ensures that quality age-appropriate nursing care is delivered to all patients on his/her nursing unit in accordance with the philosophy, policies, procedures and program plans of the hospital. Assists with the development of patient care standards, orientation and continuing education. Evaluates staff performance in accordance with organizational policies. Develops, implements and maintains unit budget. Participates in nursing quality assurance. Maintains unit administration including scheduling and maintenance of supplies and equipment. Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient's age specific needs and provide age specific treatment and care. As an ADPC Registered Nurse (RN), a typical day may include:
  • Facilitates the safe and effective functioning of the unit
  • Interviewing and hiring licensed/unlicensed personnel in collaboration with Nursing Director
  • Facilitates the orientation process for new employees
  • Making assignments that maintain preceptor orientee relationship
  • Working the preceptororientee to solve any problems
  • Ensuring that orientees complete the unit-based orientation within an appropriate individualized time frame
  • Contributes to the professional growth and development of staff by
  • Continuously assessing patient care to evaluate staff knowledge and patterns of performance
  • Evaluating the staff performance as demonstrated by the completion of the performance evaluation in a timely manner,
  • Counseling and implementing appropriate disciplinary action
  • Planning coordinating unit-based education programs as identified by unit need
  • Fostering Interdisciplinary Collaborative Relationship
  • Support and maintain collaborative relationships with all disciplines that impact patient care on the unit
  • Foster an atmosphere of positive communication on the unit
  • Participates in service and hospital-wide committees as assigned
  • Management of Patient Care Delivery Maintains clinical expertise
  • Providing leadership in the delivery of patient care for the unit
  • Making assignments which consider patient needs and staff competencies
  • Assisting staff in establishing priorities for patient care need,
  • Working closely with transfer center or clearing residents and nursing supervisors to identify and resolve bed management issues,
  • Serving as a resource for interpretation of regulatory requirement
  • Implementation of policies and procedures of the nursing department
  • Promoting effective resource utilization related to clinical practice
  • Participates in the development of performance improvement projects including design performance measurement analysis and improvement
  • Provides open lines of communication for reporting medical errors and using RWJUH organizational tools and resources
  • Professional Development: Maintains membership in a professional organization
  • Plans the staffing in accordance with established standards
  • Completing and posting schedules according to policy and procedure,
  • Completing schedules in a manner that balances personal requests and unit needs
  • Collaborating with staff coordinator to ensure safe staffing pattern
  • Participating in quality and cost initiatives as demonstrated by
  • Participating with Head Nurse group in working on identified areas for quality improvement
  • Assisting Nursing Directors with the management of the daily operational budget
  • Adopts at least two patient safety quality initiatives from the National Quality Forum Safety Practices or other credible safety agency as pertinent to the scope of service
  • Communicates and documents progress in selected safety quality initiatives to employees during regular staff meetings and as needed
  • Unit or departmental specific safety initiatives
  • Participate in the Infection Prevention and at least one other patient safety initiative while exhibiting an understanding of and compliance with RWJUH protocols, policies and procedures

To be considered for the ADPC opportunity, you must hold an active New Jersey Registered Nurse license in good standing or Multistate RN License with NJ Endorsement and a current American Heart Association BLS certification and ACLS certification required within 6 months from the date of hire. Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required, as is prior patient care experience and comfort with electronic medical record systems (EMR) like EPIC. MSN is preferred. Minimum of 3-5 years' acute BH nursing experience with one year of charge nurse of management experience, Experience with behavioral health population. Successful completion of all Orientation Programs. Development Management of Personnel. This position offers a full-time night (11pm to 7am) schedule and weekend and rotating holiday is required. Schedule during the week will vary depending on department needs, allowing you to build strong patient relationships while maintaining balance.
