The AVP, Portfolio Content Planning is accountable for how Curriculum Associates understands, evaluates, and evolves its content taxonomy and how that taxonomy functions within its systems. This is the senior leader at the intersection of curriculum expertise, content intelligence, AI enablement, and portfolio strategy. They are responsible for ensuring that the organization has the information, frameworks, and analytical capability needed to make confident decisions about how to structure content in ways that drive user experience and help internal content and technology teams evolve their tools and products.
At the core of the role is ownership of the skill spine and taxonomy system that anchors all content across Assessment, Instruction, and Core, but the focus extends well beyond it. This person owns the systems that define what we need to know about our content (metadata strategy in service of planning), and the frameworks, capabilities and processes that turn that content intelligence into the experiences and products we build — so we can create and customize offerings faster.
A critical dimension of this role is AI enablement. The taxonomy and metadata strategy this person defines must be architected to support automated tagging, AI-assisted content generation, and machine-driven portfolio analysis to reduce manual overhead across the content organization and enable the pace and scale of analysis that a growing portfolio demands. This leader partners closely with AI/ML and engineering teams to ensure that the content layer is AI-ready and actively identifies opportunities to drive meaningful operational efficiency through intelligent automation.
- Own governance and serve as final decision-maker for PLD Claims and taxonomy changes, managing intake and consulting SMEs across Assessment, Instruction, and Core to keep the skill spine coherent for both products and AI systems.
- Define and own the portfolio's content metadata strategy — what must be known about each content type, how it's captured, and how the schema is designed for AI enablement — partnering with the Technical Platform Product Owner, Content Modeling Owner, and AI/ML Engineering to keep it technically realizable and current.
- Lead portfolio content research using AI-assisted analysis to generate coverage maps and gap analyses, partnering with Data & Analytics to connect metadata and performance data for ongoing portfolio monitoring.
- Define and validate new offerings, state customizations, feature updates, and deprecation criteria using AI-assisted coverage and performance analysis, partnering with product, curriculum, and strategy teams to keep decisions grounded in content intelligence.
- Ensure the metadata strategy reflects how educators and curriculum designers think about content, leading change management and partnering with product/portfolio strategy teams and the Content Ecosystem Authoring Owner to embed content intelligence into roadmaps and authoring workflows.
- Establish governance for PLD taxonomy, metadata, and AI outputs; represent the content perspective in governance forums; and contribute to long-term portfolio strategy by identifying gaps and monitoring AI and edtech trends.
- Own the AI enablement strategy for content intelligence — defining how the PLD taxonomy and metadata schema power AI systems for automated tagging, content alignment, and coverage analysis, and partnering with AI/ML and engineering teams to build and govern the tagging pipelines that classify content by skill, grade, standard, modality, and instructional intent.
- Identify, prioritize, and measure high-value AI efficiency opportunities — including automated gap analysis, AI-assisted state standard mapping, and machine-generated coverage reports — tracking impact through metrics like reduced manual tagging hours, faster coverage turnaround, and metadata accuracy, while staying current on emerging AI and edtech capabilities.
- 10+ years of experience in curriculum development, content strategy, portfolio planning, or a related field, with increasing scope and seniority.
- Demonstrated experience defining or governing content taxonomies, metadata frameworks, or structured content models at scale.
- Strong track record of partnering with product and technology teams to translate content requirements into system-level decisions — someone who can hold their own in a technical conversation without losing the content perspective.
- Experience using content data or analytics to inform portfolio, product, or curriculum planning decisions.
- Deep understanding of how content structure and metadata drive product experiences, data outcomes, and AI system performance.
- Comfort working alongside AI/ML teams — enough technical fluency to define content requirements for automated systems and evaluate whether AI outputs meet quality standards.
- Experience working across multiple content or curriculum domains in a matrixed organization.
- Exceptional communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to align diverse stakeholders around complex, cross-functional decisions.
- Strong systems thinker — able to see how individual metadata decisions compound into portfolio-wide planning and AI enablement choices.
Preferred
- Background in K–12 education, edtech, or standards-aligned curriculum development.
- Familiarity with proficiency frameworks, learning progressions, or skill taxonomies (e.g., Lexile, CCSS, or similar).
- Experience with AI/ML applications in content contexts: automated tagging, classification, content generation, or standards alignment systems.
- Experience with content management systems, authoring tools, or structured content environments.
- Exposure to data modeling, reporting systems, or learning analytics in an educational context.
- Prior experience in a portfolio strategy, content governance, or product planning role at a curriculum publisher or edtech company.
- Familiarity with prompt engineering, embedding-based retrieval, or machine learning evaluation frameworks applied to content use cases.
