Associate Marriage & Family Therapist opportunity.

Description

Medens Health is a full-service nonprofit mental health center providing psychotherapy, psychological evaluations, and medication management to children, adolescents, adults, and couples. We are currently seeking an Associate Therapist to join our team in San Francisco.

This role is ideal for clinicians working toward licensure who are interested in building a consistent caseload in a supportive, supervised environment. Opportunities are available to provide care on weekdays, evenings, and weekends. While services are primarily delivered in person, there is flexibility to provide telehealth sessions based on client needs. Associates may begin seeing clients upon hire, in accordance with California Board of Behavioral Science guidelines.

Position Overview:

As an Associate Therapist, you will play a vital role in addressing the mental health care needs of our diverse clientele. You will provide psychotherapy to adolescents and adults presenting with mood and anxiety disorders, behavioral concerns, and relational challenges.

You will be responsible for the full course of care, including conducting initial intake assessments, providing ongoing psychotherapy, and completing discharge planning and termination of care as clinically indicated.

Services are delivered in person at our San Francisco office, with telehealth available as appropriate. This position offers a structured, supportive environment with weekly supervision, enabling associates to continue developing clinical skills while progressing toward licensure. As a fully digital practice, we use technology to streamline workflows and enhance the experience for clinicians and patients.

Expectations:
  • Demonstrate willingness to work with diverse patient populations.
  • Respect differing worldviews and values, even when they conflict with your own.
  • Collaborate effectively and respectfully with colleagues holding different perspectives.
  • Be open to working with a variety of patients seeking care, except when personal safety is at risk or competence may compromise patient care.
  • Demonstrate availability to support a caseload of approximately 20 clients per week and attend required supervision, typically totaling around 25 hours per week.
  • Seek supervision, consultation, and training to address competency issues related to specific populations or presenting problems.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Provide individual, couple, and family psychotherapy services.
  • Conduct initial intake assessments, develop treatment plans, provide ongoing therapy, and complete discharge planning and termination of care as clinically appropriate.
  • Build and maintain a clinical caseload of approximately 20 clients per week within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of all clinical assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries in accordance with BBS standards.
  • Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in weekly individual and group supervision sessions.
  • Support client engagement and retention efforts (e.g., scheduling follow-ups, maintaining continuity of care).
  • Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the clinical supervisor or management.

Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from an accredited university in marriage and family therapy, counseling, or a closely related field.
  • Current registration (or pending registration) as an Associate Marriage & Family Therapist or Associate Professional Clinical Counselor with the California Board of Behavioral Science.
  • Upon completion of LiveScan, the Associate Therapist may begin seeing clients immediately in accordance with California Board of Behavioral Sciences guidelines (including the 90-day rule).
  • Must reside in California and be able to provide services from within the state in accordance with DHCS and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience treating clients with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, behavioral concerns, and relational issues (training experience acceptable).
  • Strong diagnostic skills using DSM-5 criteria.
  • Commitment to accurate documentation in accordance with Board of Behavioral Sciences requirements.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship requirements and able to maintain employment for a sustained period to support continuity of care.

Skills:
  • Willingness to provide care to clients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record systems.
  • Comfort delivering therapy via telehealth and in person.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable.

Perks:

As a team member at Medens Health, you'll enjoy:
  • Competitive compensation (see salary range section).
  • Flexible scheduling with autonomy to set your own hours, including evening and weekend opportunities.
