Florida A&M University's Division of Legal Affairs is pleased to announce the acceptance of qualified applications for the Associate General Counsel vacancy.
Responsibilities
The Associate General Counsel (AGC) represents the Florida A&M University (University) Board of Trustees (FAMU BOT) in all legal proceedings in State and Federal Courts, and various administrative agencies of Federal and State Government. The AGC shall be familiar with administrative operations of the FAMU BOT and the University.
This responsibility includes the preparation of all pleadings associated with Federal and State court litigation and all other proceedings before courts or agencies. Prepare and/or review most documents or instruments of legal character, e.g., contracts, leases, bid specifications, letters of agreement, and the like, in all areas of the FAMU BOT and University operations, including academic program administration, administrative affairs, student affairs, and University direct support organizations; Interpret State and Federal laws, rules and regulations; and the rules and regulations of the Board of Governors and FAMU BOT, insofar as they affect any internal operation of the University; and advise key University officials regarding the application of said laws, rules and regulations.
In this position, the AGC shall provide legal advice and services on a wide variety of legal matters for the FAMU BOT, the University and affiliated organizations with a primary emphasis on: real estate transactions (purchases, sales, leasing, etc.) and development; Design and construct contracts, permitting, easements, bond and other financing; Regulatory and contractual compliance; Preparation and review of procurement, auxiliaries, charitable agreements, vendor, and miscellaneous contracts; Legal documents (real estate, procurement, auxiliaries, third-party management contracts, and financing portfolio); and other matters of a transactional nature.
Provide legal services on related issues including asset acquisitions, structuring exempt and taxable entities and their affiliations and mergers, and related matters of a transactional nature; Responsible for such matters related to University direct support/affiliated organizations; Additionally, the AGC will be responsible for policy, regulation, and rule development related to procurement and real estate transactions; and perform other related duties as assigned by the President and/or Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel, including matters related to the FAMU BOT, University and Division of Legal Affairs.
Minimum Qualifications
A Juris Doctorate and two years of experience as an attorney. Must be a member of the Florida Bar or become a member within a year.
Recommended Competencies
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Westlaw or Lexis Legal Research Database, legal research, and writing;
Understand the numerous challenges and opportunities which occur within the University environment and, as a result, exercise independent and prudent judgment in decisions which will protect University interests;
Ability to function calmly and effectively during the times of crisis and in stressful situations is essential;
Client development skills; and,
Ability to work independently and productively as a part of a legal and administrative team.
Preferred Qualifications
The incumbent must have at least ten (10) years of experience as a practicing attorney, and demonstrated ability to handle litigation matters.
Pay Plan
This is an Administrative and Professional (A&P) position.
