Full Job Description
Reporting to the Director Foundation Relations for the Johns Hopkins Institutions, the Associate Director, Foundation Relations will focus on advancing foundation relations for the Schools of Engineering, Education, Advanced International Studies, Carey Business, JH Technology Ventures, the Center for Talented Youth, and the Peabody Institute. The Associate Director will develop and execute a highly strategic approach to securing major foundation support, especially for faculty engaged in current and emerging research with a nationally and internationally competitive edge, and for institutional priority programs related to the University and its community.

The Office of Foundation Relations works collaboratively with colleagues across Johns Hopkins University and Medicine to establish long-term partnerships, strengthen existing relationships, and initiate new contacts with major private foundations.

The Associate Director, Foundation Relations will support and execute a highly strategic approach to securing major foundation support, especially for faculty engaged in current and emerging research with a nationally and internationally competitive edge, and for institutional priority programs related to the University and its community.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Work in partnership with the Senior Director of Foundation Relations, institutional and Divisional leadership, Development colleagues, and faculty members to maximize independent foundation support for the University
  • Lead the development and implementation of a high-level strategic and creative approach that responds to relevant Divisional priorities and also identifies and pursues independent foundation resources that can advance other areas of competitive strength
  • With a focus on grants of at least six figures, work closely with academic leaders, faculty, and Development colleagues to identify prospects, cultivate their interest, build productive relationships, negotiate proposal content, and submit high-quality solicitations - including planning and staffing visits and site visits
  • With the help of other Central Foundation Relations staff, provide advice and general guidance to University Development colleagues seeking assistance for foundation support of funding needs that fall below these thresholds
  • Work closely and effectively with faculty to develop and prepare concepts, letters of inquiry, proposals, and, when appropriate, grant reports
  • Work with the Senior Associate Director of Foundation Relations for Medicine to develop a pipeline of emerging foundations relevant to the University and tailored cultivation/solicitation plans involving high-level volunteers and others as appropriate
  • Work with the Associate Director of Foundation Relations in the Central office to ensure that Foundation Relations provides the highest-quality support for selected limited-submission competitions
  • Manage a portfolio of key foundation prospects and assume primary responsibility in the Foundation Relations office for maintaining/strengthening relationships with local foundations on behalf of the Johns Hopkins Institutions
  • Manage strategic stewardship of major funders, including presidential annual reports, visits, and site visits, as appropriate
  • Supervise the Assistant Director and Senior Development Coordinator in the Central Foundation Relations office and foster their professional development
  • Ensure comprehensive coverage and dissemination of foundation news relevant to the University and its community interests
  • In consultation with the Senior Director, help develop and deliver presentations for faculty and Development colleagues to increase knowledge about independent foundation funding, build capabilities for foundation grant-seeking among faculty, and foster new sources of support.
  • Other duties as assigned.


In addition to the duties described above, the Associate Director, Foundation Relations will:
  • Focus on foundation funding opportunities through the management of a portfolio that includes the School of Nursing, selected departments/initiatives within the Bloomberg School of Public health, Baltimore-based foundations, and support of the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund, an endowment grant program led by OFR on behalf of JHU.
  • Elevate the Office of Foundation Relations' (OFR) capacity to support proposal development opportunities ($50,000-$150,000) across health sciences divisions as assigned by team leadership.
  • Assist with selected limited submission competitions (TBD)


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years of related experience, with two years foundation fundraising or grant writing experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
