Job Description

Barnes Center at The Arch is Syracuse University's integrated health and wellness center which incorporates Counseling, Health, Health Promotion and Recreation. The Associate Director for Revenue Cycle and Operations is a core member of the Health and Wellness leadership team, reporting directly to the Associate Vice President for Health and Wellness. The Associate Director ensures efficient revenue cycle management, accurate insurance processing, compliance with medical billing regulations, and implementation of reliable technology systems supporting clinical and administrative operations. This role directly supervises two medical billing staff, two health insurance staff, and one IT staff member. In addition to direct oversight of medical billing, health insurance, and IT, this position partners with Psychiatry, Pharmacy and Medical Laboratory to support accurate fee setting, billing, and reimbursement processes across those units. This position functions as the Barnes Center Privacy Officer.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in business administration, healthcare administration, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in medical billing/revenue cycle management.
  • At least two years supervisory experience.


Skills and Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of insurance processes, medical coding (CPT/ICD-10), and healthcare compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage cross-functional and integrative team, including IT staff.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple departments.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.


Responsibilities
  • Direct oversight of medical billing and revenue cycle.
  • Includes supervision of two medical billers to ensure timely and accurate claims submissions.
  • Monitor accounts receivable, denial rates, and reimbursement trends.
  • Manage provider enrollment and pursue opportunities to expand accepted insurance plans.
  • Direct oversight of the Health Insurance Office and administrative oversight of the student health insurance plan, including enrollment, waivers, eligibility verification, and student/family communications.
  • Ensure coordination between the Insurance Office and Medical Billing.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the insurance carrier/broker on plan administration, claims issues, and annual plan review.
  • Direct supervision of two Health Insurance staff.
  • Supervise the Application Specialist to ensure reliable and accurate management of the EHR and related administrative systems.
  • Coordinate with divisional IT on system integration, security protocols, and data privacy compliance.
  • Serve as the Barnes Center Privacy Officer.
  • Support and oversee annual QI projects as they pertain to other job responsibilities.
  • Serve as a member of the Barnes Center QI Committee.
  • Support pharmacy and lab revenue cycle.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy and lab leadership to support accurate charges, coding, and claim submissions.
  • Monitor reimbursement trends, denials, and payer issues.
  • Help identify and resolve gaps between clinical documentation and billing/coding accuracy.
  • Support integration of pharmacy and lab data into overall revenue cycle reporting and analytics.
