Summary:

The individual in this role will be responsible for leading the company’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) efforts within the Devens Facility to drive long-term company and stakeholder value. The position will develop, plan, organize, and execute EHS programs, policies, procedures, and training to maintain a safe, health, and environmental compliant facility at the direction of the site Sr. Director of EHS. The Associate Director will promote compliant, forward-leaning culture and preserve BMS’ reputation while driving shared Company objectives at the direction of the site Sr. Director of EHS.  The Associate Director of EHS will be expected to approach the coordination of these tasks in alignment with the BMS values of integrity, inclusion, passion, innovation, urgency, and accountability.  This position plays a key role in aligning corporate and local policies and procedures and will enable and foster a proactive and integrated EHS culture that promotes a positive, proactive approach throughout all operations.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, safety, medical surveillance and sustainability laws, regulations, codes, rules, and consensus guides. 
  • Develop and implement new EHS programs, policies, and procedures and update and improve existing ones.
  • Provide applicable regulatory and technical practical guidance and execute programs, policies, procedures, and trainings as the subject matter expert for various EHS programs.
  • Communicates strategic and business objectives for EHS, balancing business risk, customer expectations and regulatory requirements while remaining consistent with company and site strategy at the direction of the site EHS Sr. Director.
  • Assure safety incidents are reported and escalated as required by BMS policy and investigates causes of industrial accidents and/or injuries to develop solutions to minimize or prevent recurrence.
  • Manage Corporate EHS self-assessment program for the site, manages identification of gaps, and coordinates timely closure of corrective and preventative actions (CAPAs) at the direction of the site EHS Sr. Director.
  • Execute Management of Change (MOC) program for EHS to include EHS Impact Assessments and Change Requests.
  • Participates in EHS operational and tier discussions, EHS committees and teams, inspections, GEMBAs, and audits.
  • Review and ensure accurate and complete resolution of issues as they arise and escalates concerns, resource constraints, needs, with urgency to EHS Sr. Director.
  • Stops operations and activities that could harm the environment, workforce, or facilities. 
  • Utilizes site platforms for investigations, reporting, inspection, and other management system platforms and their outcomes.
  • Participates in and shows leadership in an EHS culture at the site that partners with operational teams to ensure all are accountable for EHS culture and performance, modeling what good looks like.
  • Proactively collaborates at both the site and above-site levels.
  • Conducts Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) reviews against BMS standards and applicable compliance standards, identifies gaps, and completed actions against gaps identified in a systemic fashion using appropriate quality and EHS system tools for documentation and CAPA tracking purposes.
  • Brings new approaches to continually improve the effectiveness of workflows and processes and learns and applies new concepts.
  • Helps to coach and mentor EHS Team members during day-to-day operations.
  • Investigates causes of industrial events and/or injuries to develop systemic solutions to minimize or prevent recurrence.
  • Participates actively in site Leadership Teams as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in science or engineering.
  • A Master’s / Graduate degree in a relevant discipline is desired.
  • A minimum of 10 years of previous experience in a manufacturing Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) role.
  • Previous experience in chemical or pharmaceutical industry is preferred.
  • Professional license or certification in appropriate discipline desired.
  • Experience managing people
  • Six Sigma Certification (Green belt or above) desired
  • Ability to influence and drive a sustainable EHS culture.
  • Highly skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and EHS systems like Intellex (or similar).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to attend to multiple high priority items simultaneously and think creatively, critically, and strategically to solve problems in a complex environment with both urgency and agility, calmly.
  • Proclivity for partnership and cross-team collaboration
  • Advanced knowledge of cGMP regulations and how they apply to the EH&S requirements.
  • Clean room or aseptic manufacturing experience is preferred

Compensation Overview:

Devens - MA - US: $179,220 - $217,176

The starting compensation range(s) for this role are listed above for a full-time employee (FTE) basis. Additional incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility) may be available. The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills, where the job is performed, the employee’s work schedule, job-related knowledge, and experience. Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.

  • Phoenix, AZ, Puerto Rico and Rayzebio Exempt, Non-Exempt, Hourly Employees: 160 hours annual paid vacation for new hires with manager approval, 11 national holidays, and 3 optional holidays

Based on eligibility*, additional time off for employees may include unlimited paid sick time, up to 2 paid volunteer days per year, summer hours flexibility, leaves of absence for medical, personal, parental, caregiver, bereavement, and military needs and an annual Global Shutdown between Christmas and New Years Day.

All global employees full and part-time who are actively employed at and paid directly by BMS at the end of the calendar year are eligible to take advantage of the Global Shutdown.

*Eligibility Disclosure: The summer hours program is for United States (U.S.) office-based employees due to the unique nature of their work. Summer hours are generally not available for field sales and manufacturing operations and may also be limited for the capability centers. Employees covered under a collective bargaining agreement should consult that document to determine if they are eligible.
