Full Job Description
Position Summary:

The Associate Director, Congressional Affairs is responsible to lobby the Federal government and assist in government affairs efforts. This person will develop and implement bipartisan federal legislative initiatives and monitor congressional developments for the Association's Public Policy division based in Washington, DC. The Associate Director will report to the division's Director, Congressional Affairs, also based in the Washington office.

We seek an individual with experience working with members of Congress, their staff, Congressional committees, and other key policymakers. It is necessary that they have in-depth knowledge and experience with legislative processes and programs. The preferred candidate will also have Congressional and/or direct lobbying experience as well as substantive expertise in health care issues.

The successful candidate must be a strong team player and enjoy working in a collegial yet highly demanding and effective culture. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate excellent writing and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as in a team, exercise sound judgment, execute strategy, and operate with confidentiality will also be required as are excellent interpersonal skills. We seek an individual with an appreciation for the complexities of working within a large voluntary health organization. In addition, the preferred candidate will have a strong mission orientation and a passion for advocacy on behalf of the Alzheimer's Association and the people it represents.

Responsibilities

Essential functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Engage in bipartisan lobbying and public policy activities.

  • Work with bipartisan members of Congress, their staffs and Congressional committees on the Association's federal legislative priorities.

  • Work on the creation or modification of federal policy positions; and drafting legislative initiatives as well as supporting statements and documentation.

  • Analyze and report on congressional developments that could materially affect efforts by the Alzheimer's Association and/or its affiliated chapter network to accomplish shared strategic objectives; and making recommendations on and developing responses to emerging federal legislative issues.

  • Engage in strategic thinking, brainstorming, and long-term planning (in consultation with the Director, Congressional Affairs) on long-term projects and activities that could be undertaken by the Federal Affairs department.

  • Represent the Association in relevant federal affairs coalitions and representing the Department in internal and external meetings.

  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required.

  • Six to eight years Congressional experience and/or lobbying experience with a health care association.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.

  • Congressional and/or direct lobbying experience.

  • Expertise in health care issues and the legislative process.

Position Grade & Compensation: Grade 410 The Alzheimer's Association's good faith expectation for the salary range for this role is between $120,000.00 - $135,000.00.

Reports To: Senior Director, Congressional Affairs
