Position Title
Associate Dean, Centre of Teaching, Learning and Scholarship (Term-Certain)

Position Summary

In an entrepreneurial and team focused environment, the Associate Dean is responsible for academic leadership within their school or division and promotes excellence within a learner- centred environment.

Leading a comprehensive learner-focused team, the Associate Dean has overall responsibility for the development/redevelopment, delivery and assessment of programs and curriculum to contribute to the institutional reputation as a hub of innovation and incubation for lifelong learning programming. The Associate Dean is responsible for key decision making in relation to program and course development at the institutional level ,and for achieving strategic and financial targets.
The Associate Dean is responsible for the Centre of Teaching, Learning and Scholarship, including strategic direction related to Program Quality Assurance, the Teaching Common, the Research Common, Research Ethics Board, and the Canadian Council of Animal Care. The Associate Dean is responsible to advance the Academic Plan in collaboration across the academic portfolio while enhancing/developing/facilitating a culture of innovation and scholarship across the institution. The Associate Dean utilizes flexibility and creativity to execute the programming goals of the institution to meet community needs while meeting fiscal targets.

The Associate Dean provides support and mentorship to staff, faculty, and instructors including work plans, professional development, and scholarly activity and scholarship to ensure delivery of a high-quality learning experience for learners.

  • The Associate Dean works with the Associate Vice President, Deans, Associate Deans, and other colleagues to establish and implement School/Division and program goals and objectives to enable an institutional culture of life-long learning and academic excellence in a learner-centered environment.


Position Responsibilities

Academic Leadership
  • Promotes academic excellence in the development, delivery, assessment, and review of programs within the learner-centered environment
  • Promotes excellence in research and scholarship across the academic portfolio and in collaboration with Schools and divisions
  • Advances research and scholarship as aligned with the Strategic Research Plan and program mix
  • Creates new pathways for 21st century academic standards and assessment of student learning
  • Manages projects related to new and reimagined programming directions and opportunities
  • Facilitates the approval of curriculum in compliance with the applicable policy(credit or non-credit) and ensures design of laddering and stacking to credit programs where appropriate
  • Promotes progressive learner-centered delivery models in the development and revision of curriculum
  • Fosters broad relationships and partnerships to facilitate creative & strong academic programming
  • Resolves issues related to learner success
  • Supports and facilitates research collaborations, visiting researchers, and other initiatives that allow

Teaching Excellence within a Learner Centered Environment
  • Within the School and Divisions, provides collaborative leadership, guidance, and support to initiatives in support of faculty and students in a learner-centered environment
  • Leads the culture and brand of the Centre of Teaching, Learning and Scholarship, signature student experience and strong record of student success, either in end point learning or in learning pathways
  • Ensures alignment of and compliance with policies and procedures and any regulatory body where applicable that contributes to and supports a strong culture of teaching excellence and academic integrity in the learning environment
  • Provides leadership and support to faculty and staff in the integration of appropriate technology in the teaching and learning environment
  • Ensures responsible and effective use of resources to support staff development and excellence in the teaching and learning environment
  • Facilitates the exploration, development and growth of work integrated learning into the course and program level
  • Facilitates a structure and process for laddering and stacking micro-credentials into traditional certificates, diplomas and degree programs
  • Facilitates the generation of resources (funds, facilities, equipment, partnerships, etc.) to support engagement of staff and students in developing alterative pathways for new and reimagined programs


Research, Creative/Scholarly Activity and Scholarship
  • Facilitates the growth and development of a culture of research and scholarship across

  • in support of continuous innovation for our region and the economic, social and cultural growth of our communities
  • Accountable to maintain compliance with research policies and procedures tomeet the requirements of the Tri-Agency and the Canadian Council of AnimalCare as well as academic freedom and intellectual property policies, standards,and rights
  • Fosters growth and development in an environment of open inquiry, creativity, and innovation
  • Facilitates significant promotion of RDP
  • research initiatives and research excellence through various means to internal and external audiences
  • Facilitates members' sharing of their innovative and alternative program and scholarly/creative activity through staff and faculty presentations internally and externally Works to effectively resolve issues related to learner success
  • Manages the responsible and effective use of resources and funds to support research committees and councils and develop appropriate infrastructure


Personnel Management
  • Demonstrates leadership within the School/Divisions for continuous improvement, innovation, industry relevance in programming and strong student centric operations
  • Operationalizes and applies Collective Agreements and institutional Policy as they apply to School/Division operations, in conjunction with other Associate Deans, Deans, the Associate Vice President, and People and Culture
  • Provides ongoing coaching and support for staff in accordance with the performance enhancement program
  • Demonstrates accountability for Occupational Health & Safety responsibilities
  • Develops successful structure and processes to ensure the effective distributionand delegation of work
  • Maintains confidentiality of personal information in accordance with Institution policy, procedures, and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act


Internal and External Liaison
The Associate Dean ensures effective communication, collaboration, and liaison with internal and external parties:

Internal:
  • Consultation between School/Division and service areas
  • Coordinating intra-departmental and inter-departmental communication
  • Coordinating departmental communication with college committees and facilitating participation on institution committees


External:
  • Acts as the contact person for consultation with relevant regulatory and professional associations
  • Acts as liaison with other post-secondary institutions


Financial Management
  • Sets annual financial targets in collaboration with the School/Division Management Team
  • Ensures that programming complies with financial formulas outlined in the Non-credit Programming policy where applicable
  • Monitors budget and targets and adjusts staffing based on revenues
  • Effectively allocates resources within established budgets and monitors foreffectiveness including managing overtime and vacation use
  • Analyzes budgets and makes in-year adjustments as required to achieve expected outcomes


Technology Management
  • Provides guidance and engagement to Information Systems to investigate, implement and maintain appropriate technologies to enable a continuously improving learning environment
  • Facilitates development and maintenance of effective and timely information on the internal and external websites
  • Facilitates integration of innovative learning methodologies


Marketing & Communications
  • Facilitates collaboration to produce effective marketing materials
  • Collaborates on strategic enrolment management initiatives
  • Provides guidance and engagement to Marketing and Communications to investigate, implement and maintain appropriate practices and activities to achieve the School/Division's recruitment and retention targets


Facility Management
  • Provides guidance and engagement to Facilities Management to investigate, implement and maintain appropriate facilities to enable a continuously improving learning environment.
  • Ensures effective utilization of facility space


Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of a relevant Master's Degree from a recognized institution plus 5-7years of related experience in adult education and lifelong learning.
  • 3-5 years of progressively responsible leadership experience, including direct supervision of employees (recruitment, selection, development, coaching, performance assessment)
  • Demonstrated success leading in a collaborative environment
  • Demonstrates strong emotional intelligence i.e., to demonstrate empathy and manage emotion of self and others
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills with both written and verbal communication
  • Proven ability to manage revenue generation/cost recovery budgets and achieve financial targets
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in leadership and the management of change initiatives
