Position Summary

The role of the Associate Dean (AD) is to provide academic leadership to departments and programs to promote excellence in teaching and learning and to foster a culture of scholarly activity. The AD provides support and mentorship as the direct supervisor to faculty and staff. The AD supports faculty and staff in their professional development and scholarly activity to ensure delivery of a consistently high-quality learning experience.

The Associate Dean is responsible for the administration in matters related to: human resources, enrolment, facility resources, budget and financial planning as per delegated signing authority, program accreditation as appropriate, and internal and external liaison as assigned. Through the lens of the exceptional student experience, this role works closely with the Dean, Program Chairs, faculty and support staff in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programs/courses. As part of the school leadership team, leads new program/course development the school and may act on behalf of the Dean as required.

Together with the Dean, provides leadership and direction with partnerships and collaborative initiatives that involve the community, professional associations, agencies, and other post-secondary institutions.

Key Responsibilities

Management and Supervision to Faculty and Staff
  • Exercises overall managerial discretion, balancing the needs of students, with available resources within the assigned area.
  • Based on operational needs of the team, the department and the College, has overall authority to assign/reassign work of employees.
  • Develops, gains approval for, recruits and hires employees to meet the changing needs of the assigned programs/courses.
  • Reviews and ensures compliance with the professional, ethical, legal and legislative requirements of the various functions and staff within the team.
  • Establishes key objectives for staff - ensuring these objectives are achieved as outlined to a high quality standard and are in compliance with college/program policy and procedure.
  • Responsible for overall supervision, evaluation, scheduling, disciplining, performance management and motivation of staff to ensure optimal service is maintained.
    • Performance appraisals on direct reports
    • Writes and reviews job descriptions, recruitment action forms
    • Reviews postings and interview scripts
    • Shortlists candidates, participates in interview panels
    • Evaluates candidates and makes recommendations on candidates to be hired
    • Considers and approves vacation requests, professional development and overtime needs with consideration to budget parameters
    • Maintenance of absence reports, vacation and other absence approvals
    • Takes corrective action on performance issues as required.
  • Interprets and applies the terms of relevant collective agreements and terms of conditions and may represent management in responding to any grievances of employees within team. As such, is a key consultant to the Dean/Director during collective bargaining.
  • Upholds college policies as they apply to operations.
  • Works with faculty and staff to orient new hires and prepare them for success in achievement of their responsibilities.
  • Ensures effective workload assignment and evaluation of outcomes for faculty.
  • Develops recruitment and selection and retention strategies to attract and retain faculty and staff with required education and experience.


Academic Leadership
  • Provides leadership in the development of new programs/courses in consultation with Dean.
  • Supports academic excellence in the development, delivery, assessment, and review of programs/courses.
  • Establishes appropriate academic standards and assessment of learner learnings.
  • Coordinates budgetary and statistical reports regarding services within the program/courses.
  • Coordinates business planning and budget development, including business case development.
  • Accountable for monitoring budget activities within the assigned programs/courses.
  • Leads and oversees curriculum review, maintenance, and development.
  • Develops quality programming and reviews ongoing metrics, faculty engagement and performance, curriculum renewal; authentic learning, etc.; assesses new opportunities, continuous improvements, enrolment management
  • Works with Dean in projecting, prioritizing and recommending staff and faculty requirements.
  • Provides leadership and support to faculty and staff in the integration of appropriate technology in the teaching and learning environment.
  • Ensures responsible and effective use of resources to support faculty development and excellence in teaching and learning.
  • Implements business plans following the annual planning cycle in consultation with the Dean, Program Chairs, faculty and staff.
  • Approved course schedules and timetables within the context of College policy and program/course needs and ensures consistency with the requirements.
  • Ensures that academic changes are smoothly integrated and implemented across programs/courses.
  • Oversees academic discipline, individual learner concerns, course transfers and academic continuance.
  • Act on behalf of the Dean in all aspects in Dean's absence.


Ensures that Programs/Courses are Operating at a Level of Excellence
  • Resolves problems arising from the day-to-day operation of instructional programs/courses brought to his/her attention by the Program Chairs.
  • Ensures the academic quality and integrity of courses, including alignment to approved curriculum, learning outcomes, and institutional academic standards.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and support to initiatives in support of students in a learner-centered environment.
  • Oversees ongoing day-to-day operations in our collaborative initiatives.
  • Directs the evaluation of the programs/courses at all levels.
  • Leads the ongoing evaluation of programs/courses.
  • Optimizes enrolment management process to enable student and employer success and satisfaction.
  • Leads program enrolment planning in alignment with institutional strategic plan
  • Directs accreditation processes for programs in consultation with the Dean and Program Chairs.
  • Collaborates with and supports the Dean in the evaluation, interpretation and revision of faculty and College policies and various initiatives for the advancement of the vision and mission of the faculty.
  • Advocates for and supports learner needs and issues with the Program Chairs and faculty.


Manages Internal and External Community Relationships/Liaisons
  • Represents Bow Valley College on select government, professional association committees or bodies; as determined by the Dean.
  • Develops partnerships with other agencies or organizations where appropriate and in collaboration with the Dean.
  • Participates in the deliberations of advisory networks for all programs/courses as appropriate; communicates reports and recommendations to the Dean.
  • Liaises with other post-secondary institutions to exchange information and develop partnership education opportunities.
  • Represents Bow Valley College in an administrative capacity in external relationships as determined by the Dean.


Facilitates Teaching, Scholarships and Applied Research
  • Explores opportunities for faculty research and scholarships.
  • Facilitates the development of applied research proposals and projects in collaboration with the Dean and Research and Innovation department.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of master's degree in related field.
  • Five years experience in a post-secondary environment, preferably with experience both in teaching and academic leadership; experience in the area of applied research would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated continuing professional development in:
    • Simulation pedagogy
    • Interprofessional education
    • Technology-enhanced learning
  • Evidence of scholarship or research in simulation, education, or healthcare practice
  • An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered.

  • CCSNE- Canadian Certified Simulation Nurse Educator
  • CHSE-Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator
  • CHSE-A Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator Advanced
