Responsibilities

  • Perform examinations under oath and conduct legal research while authoring coverage opinions for claims personnel.

Full Job Description
HeplerBroom LLC, a large defense firm, is hiring for a mid to senior level associate position for its Chicago-based insurance coverage practice. Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years' experience in insurance coverage litigation, construction, trucking and premise liability.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with management of a thriving insurance coverage practice, based in the firm's Chicago office, but with cases throughout the Midwest;
  • Actively own in the defense and prosecution of coverage matters from case inception through trial, working on a one to one ratio with the supervising partner;
  • The successful candidate will have an established understanding of first-party insurance coverage, with an emphasis on property insurance;
  • Established competence in legal writing, including the drafting of substantive legal motions in both state and federal court, including motions for dismissal and summary judgment;
  • Familiarity with federal and state written discovery procedures and ability to independently propound and respond to targeted, insurance coverage and institutional discovery;
  • Regularly conduct 30(b)(6) depositions, as well as the depositions of policyholders, public adjusters, engineers and building contractors.
  • Conduct examinations under oath, along with ancillary legal research and author coverage opinions to both claims adjusting personnel and in-house counsel;
  • Defense of coverage and extracontractual liability matters in state and federal courts, as well as the prosecution of declaratory judgment matters on issues of insurance coverage;
  • Oversight and advice of counsel to claims personnel and in-house counsel on property insurance appraisals;

This position requires:
  • Licensure in both the State of Illinois and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, or other applicable federal district court;
  • A minimum of four (4) years of law licensure, and a minimum of three (3) years of documented insurance coverage experience;
  • Strong organization and communication skills, both verbal and written, and an ability to manage files and report directly to clients.
  • Ability to provide writing samples prior to interview, including applicable deposition transcripts and motions;
  • Strong research and analytical skills;
