Job Overview:APTIM is seeking an experienced Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE) with deep expertise in heavy civil transportation projects, particularly bridge deck replacements, roadway rehabilitation, ITS/ESS upgrades, and multi-agency construction oversight. The ideal candidate brings strong field inspection capability, hands-on project administration, and the ability to support Resident Engineer functions, including managing inspectors, resolving field issues, producing project documentation, and ensuring work meets agency specifications.
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:Construction Oversight & Field Inspection- Perform daily construction inspection of heavy civil work, including:
- Bridge deck demolition and reconstruction, structural steel work, parapets, bearings, joint systems, painting, and HPC/HMA placements.
- Roadway rehabilitation, milling/paving, HPTO overlays, shoulder work, drainage, guide rail, and ADA-compliant improvements.
- ITS/ESS and communication infrastructure upgrades, including cameras, communication networks, electrical systems, and LAN expansions.
- Verify contractor work against approved submittals, RFI responses, and agency specifications.
- Elevate and/or resolve field conflicts and track impacts to schedule or cost.
- Prepare and manage:
- Daily inspection reports, MS Office and agency forms, and DC-144/126 documentation.
- Quantity measurements, payment estimates, force account records, and price adjustment tables.
- Change Orders (COs) and Unapproved Adjustments (UARs).
- Project closeout packages and full as-built documentation.
- Maintain project files, correspondence, logs, and weekly updates to the client.
- Resident Engineer Support / Acting RE Function
- Lead and coordinate inspection teams and review inspection reports.
- Schedule, facilitate, and document contractor/client meetings.
- Serve as Acting Resident Engineer when required
- Client & Stakeholder Interaction:
- Interface with NJTA, NJDOT, DRJTBC, and municipal/county representatives.
- Ensure contractor compliance with specifications, safety requirements, and permit conditions.
- Coordinate traffic control (MPT), nightwork operations, and staging activities.
Basic Qualifications:- Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering
- 10+ years total construction experience
- 8 years with NJTA experience
- Demonstrated experience as Senior Inspector, Office Engineer, and Assistant Resident Engineer on multimillion-dollar transportation projects.
- Proficiency in MS Office, project scheduling (Primavera P6 exposure), digital reporting systems (e.g., CAPEX, DRJTBC systems)
- NICET Levels IV preferred
- OSHA 10-hour Safety.
As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay range for this position is $140k $160k year. Compensation depends on several factors including: experience, education, key skills, geographic location of the position, client requirements, external market competitiveness, and internal equity among other employees within APTIM.
