Job Description

This is a full-time, on-site role for an Assistant Nurse Manager of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology department. This leader supports outpatient nurses, social workers, physicians, nurse practitioners, and psychosocial team members in providing care to this extremely sensitive and complex patient population.

Supports unit operations by coordinating patient care, staffing, and safety. Oversees admissions, discharges, and rounds. Conducts performance appraisals, promotes professional development, and ensures regulatory compliance. Responds to emergencies, fosters collaboration, and maintains a positive work environment aligned with high standards of care.

Principal Accountabilities:

1. Identifies patient service requirements by establishing personal rapport with patients and families.
2. Maintains nursing operations by initiating, coordinating, and putting program, operational, and personnel policies and procedures into place.
3. Assures quality of care by developing and interpreting nursing standards of care within the specialty.
4. Maintains and manages nursing and psychosocial staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training nurses and auxiliary staff.
5. Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families. Promotes patient independence by establishing patient care goals and providing information to patients and health care team by answering questions and requests.
6. Protects patients and employees by developing and interpreting infection-control policies and protocols, enforcing medication administration, storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
7. Maintains documentation of patient care services by auditing patient and department records and maintains patient confidence by monitoring confidential information processing.
8. Achieves financial objectives and ensures emergency equipment availability/nursing supplies and completing preventive maintenance requirements.
9. Maintains professional and technical knowledge and maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams.
10. Supports the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology nurse educator in efforts to keep nursing staff competencied in cutting-edge skills and information.

11. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:
1. BSN required.
2. BLS required.
3. 3-5 years of healthcare experience
4. APHON Chemo/Biotherapy Provider required

Preferred:
1. MSN preferred.

2. PALS preferred.

3. Certification in area of specialty (Pediatric Certification and/or CPHON) preferred

  • Positive communication skills; Experience with Quality initiatives, action plans, and auditing; Time management and multitasking skills to facilitate patient movement; Experience with Joint Commission preparation for disease specific certification
  • Experience with team evaluations and disciplinary action processes; Proven ability to coach teams and provide opportunities to facilitate teamwork; MS office experience
  • Problem solving, decision making and negotiation skills
  • Strong leadership skills; Able to work with multiple departments; Superior interpersonal skills; Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality
