Description Dane County Highway and Transportation has a full time (1.0 FTE) vacancy for an Assistant Maintenance Superintendent position in Madison, WI.
The Eligibility List created will be used to fill future vacancies of the same classification over the next six (6) months. All are encouraged to apply. DEFINITIONUnder general direction of the Deputy Highway Commissioner - Operations, the Assistant Maintenance Superintendent supervises, plans, assigns, directs and monitors the work of large and small groups of employees, e.g., crew leaders and skilled laborers. Activities include: planning the work day, ordering materials and assigning maintenance equipment for an extensive system of State and County highways, roads, and streets. When required, temporarily performs Deputy Highway Commissioner - Operations duties in their absence. Monitors construction work performed by private contractors affecting county highways. Monitors utility construction in County and State right-of-way. Trains personnel and performs other related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIESOrganizes, plans and supervises work projects, e.g., ice and snow removal; drainage facilities, surface and roadside maintenance; safety appurtenances; and other road maintenance tasks. Addresses the Public's highway, road and street maintenance concerns. Inspects county, utility, and private contract work. Recommends County and State repair and maintenance projects for budget purposes. Keeps records of time and materials. Works closely with the Shop Supervisor on scheduling and maintaining equipment. Performs other supervisory duties as assigned by the Deputy Highway Commissioner - Operations. Works closely with the Engineering division to coordinate utility, access permits and special projects as assigned.
Education, Experience and Special RequirementsEducation, Training and Experience:Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to a High School Diploma/GED, and experience in maintenance or construction of roads, drainage structures, or related construction, which can include vocational training or an apprenticeship. Three (3) years of supervisory or five (5) years of lead work experience over crews performing maintenance or construction of roads, drainage structures, or related construction is required.
Certifications and Licenses:Must have a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License for a vehicle with air brakes within six (6) months of employment. Everyone who has a CDL must be registered in the US Department of Transportation's Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse. Registration is available at Applicants must pass drug/alcohol testing after a conditional offer of employment has been made.
Special Requirements:Must have a valid driver's license and access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent. Must be available for emergency (snow and others) call on a 24-hour, 7-day basis. 50% of the time is traveling in a vehicle and 50% is in a typical office environment. Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:Must be able to hear and see within normal ranges with or without corrective devices. Must be able to work and drive day and evening hours. Must be able to get in and out of vehicles and other motorized equipment. Must be able to bend over and grasp objects on the ground or floor (seldom to repeatedly in a day), either in a repair shop setting or in the field. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time driving to check on a variety of matters. 50% of the time is traveling in a vehicle and 50% is in a typical office environment. Safety shoes required, plus safety vest, hard hat, eye, ear and glove protection when the job dictates it.
Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of equipment, materials, methods and practices used in the repair and maintenance of streets, roads, and drainage structures. Knowledge and familiarity with highway systems. Knowledge of requirements regarding highway construction and maintenance. Excellent supervisory skills. Ability to use various computer programs including utilizing Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to read, write, and understand engineering plans. Ability to plan and estimate cost of maintenance and repair projects. Ability to inspect construction and repair work. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with peers, employees, and the public. Ability to assign and supervise a large group of employees in widely scattered locations. Ability to apply logical reasoning in performing routine functions following prescribed standard practices, and policies. Must be able to perform onsite evaluations of field situations. Good communication skills, on phone, radio, and in person, and be able to deal with an irate citizen(s) and/or employee(s) in a calm manner.

Bilingual Pay: Employees who work in bilingual designated positions receive an additional $2.00 per hour.
Undesirable Hours Premium Pay: Employees may receive undesirable hours pay of $2.00 for anytime worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m and for anytime on Saturday and/or Sunday. (not applicable with all employee groups).
Paid Parental Leave: Dane County also provides 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birth or adoption of a child.
Caregiver Leave: Dane County offers 80 hours of paid leave to care for an ill family member.
Telecommuting: Telecommuting allows employees to work remotely for all or part of their work week. Dane County considers telecommuting to be a viable, flexible option when both the employee and the job are suited to such an arrangement. Dane County will permit telecommuting when it benefits the productivity of the employee and their department and if determined by employee's department that telecommuting is not detrimental to either the County or the employee.
