We're now looking for a seasoned, pragmatic, and forward-thinking Associate General Counsel, Product & Privacy to join our Legal team and partner closely with our AI, engineering, and product teams as we build solutions at the edge of innovation.

In this role, you won't just interpret the law - you'll shape how our cutting-edge technology is built and brought to life, in a way that's fast, compliant, and trusted. You'll bring crisp, code-level advice, deep product intuition, and strong cross-functional instincts to the table.

What you'll do:
  • Guide how we build, launch, scale, and monitor both traditional and AI-powered products - ensuring compliance without slowing down innovation.
  • Advise on global privacy, data protection, and responsible data handling practices across the full product lifecycle.
  • Help shape and articulate BetterUp's point of view on privacy, AI, and data governance - balancing risk, trust, and speed.
  • Serve as a strategic partner across Legal, Product, Engineering, Security, and GTM teams - translating legal nuance into clear, actionable guidance.
  • Enable GTM, Commercial Legal, and customer-facing teams to confidently communicate our AI, data, and privacy posture - building customer trust from the first conversation.
  • Draft, negotiate, and manage complex agreements related to products, services, data, and technology vendors.
  • Contribute to the development of BetterUp's IP, patent, and open source strategies - and ensure they scale with us.

  • 10+ years of legal experience, including a combination of top-tier law firm and in-house roles, with at least 5 years in a senior product counseling capacity.
  • Proven ability to counsel on complex issues at the intersection of product development, global privacy regulations, and AI ethics.
  • Expertise in advising on privacy and data handling compliance, particularly in fast-paced product environments.
  • Deep familiarity with cloud/SaaS technologies and the ability to rapidly understand emerging product and AI frameworks.
  • Strong drafting and negotiating experience across commercial, SaaS, IP, and vendor agreements.
  • A business-first mindset with sharp judgment and the ability to move quickly in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
  • Track record of building durable, trusted partnerships across functions; you show up, follow through, and lead with clarity.
  • A calm, collaborative presence - able to advocate persuasively while maintaining cross-functional trust and momentum.
  • A highly developed sense of responsiveness, acting with urgency, and ownership.

At BetterUp, we compensate our employees fairly for their work. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, residence location, as well as market indicators. The range below is representative of base salary only and does not include equity, sales bonus plans (when applicable) and benefits. This range may be modified in the future.

The base salary range for this role is $224,000 - $355,000.

If you live in New York, the base salary range for this role is:

$258,000 - $355,000: New York City

$224,000 - $308,000: Albany, Buffalo, Nassau, Newburgh, Rochester, Syracuse

About BetterUp
