Job Summary 

The Assistant General Counsel - North American Insurance will serve as a key legal advisor to Acrisure's North American Specialty lines of business, including wholesale brokerage, managing general agent (MGA) and managing general underwriter (MGU) operations, program business, specialty distribution platforms, and related insurance operations.  This role will serve as a trusted advisor to the business, providing practical, risk-based legal counsel that supports growth while addressing regulatory, contractual, and reputational considerations. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Provide strategic legal advice regarding wholesale brokerage operations, MGA, MGU and program administration arrangements, retail-wholesale relationships, surplus lines matters, and distribution of Specialty insurance products. 

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a broad portfolio of commercial agreements supporting the Specialty business (including brokerage agreements, producer agreements, carrier agreements, program administrator agreements, MGA and MGU agreements, binding authority agreements, confidentiality agreements, etc.). 

  • Develop and maintain template agreements, playbooks, and clause libraries to enhance consistency and accelerate transaction timelines. 

  • Evaluate legal risks associated with new products, programs, carrier relationships, and business opportunities.  

  • Advise executive leadership on business initiatives, growth opportunities, regulatory developments, and legal risks. 

  • Provide legal guidance regarding insurance distribution regulations carrier audits, and carrier contractual obligations. 

  • Partner with Compliance, Regulatory Affairs, and Operations to address legal and regulatory issues affecting Specialty operations. 

  • Deliver practical, commercially focused guidance that balances business objectives with legal and reputational risk. 

  • Support acquisitions, integrations, and strategic transactions involving the Specialty business. 

  • Perform other duties and provide additional legal support as needed. 

Requirements 

  • Demonstrated expertise in wholesale brokerage, surplus lines, specialty insurance, MGA, MGU and program administrator operations, and related insurance sectors. 

  • Strong understanding of insurance regulatory frameworks, insurance distribution, and industry practices.  

  • Experience negotiating sophisticated commercial and insurance-related agreements.  

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, negotiation, analytical, and issue-spotting skills.  

  • Ability to independently manage complex legal matters and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.  

  • Practical, business-oriented judgment and the ability to communicate legal risk clearly to executive and operational stakeholders.  

  • Collaborative approach with the ability to build relationships and influence across functions.  

  • Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and commitment to timely, solution-oriented legal support.  

 

Education and Experience 

  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.  

  • Five to eight years of legal experience, with significant experience supporting insurance distribution businesses.  

  • Enthusiasm for embracing AI and technology-enabled solutions to improve efficiency, consistency, and business support. 

  • In-house experience supporting insurance brokers, wholesalers, MGAs, program administrators, carriers, or specialty insurance organizations is preferred. 

  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions in the insurance sector is preferred. 

  • Multi-state regulatory and insurance distribution experience is preferred. 

  • Experience with third party claims administration is a plus.

Pay Details:

The base compensation range for this position is $171,700 - $232,300. This range reflects Acrisure's good faith estimate at the time of this posting. Placement within the range will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to skills, experience, qualifications, location, and internal equity.

Candidates should be comfortable with an on-site presence to support collaboration, team leadership, and cross-functional partnership.
