ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION, OPERATIONS

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under administrative direction, assists the Director of Transportation with planning, organizing, directing, managing, and supervising the functions and services of District Transportation operations. Oversees assigned divisions of the Transportation Department, including departmental budget and financial operations. Acts on behalf of the Director of Transportation when designated and works closely with department leadership to ensure efficient, safe, and compliant transportation services throughout the District.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversees all finance and budgetary processes for the Transportation Department.
  • Assists in the development and administration of departmental budgets.
  • Directs the allocation and distribution of Transportation Department funds across operational areas.

Transportation Operations Management
  • Oversees transportation operations supervisory personnel and all commercial drivers employed by the District.
  • Manages and oversees daily Transportation Department training and operations.
  • Provides oversight to Site Managers, Dispatchers, Field Supervisors, Trainers, and other Transportation support staff.
  • Oversees supervisor training and professional development initiatives.
  • Monitors employee leave processes and operational staffing needs.

Regulatory Compliance and Training
  • Collaborates with the Nevada Department of Education, Nevada Highway Patrol, Department of Motor Vehicles Commercial Licensing, and public safety agencies regarding transportation regulations and training requirements.
  • Participates in the development of training programs, state policies, and operational guidelines for commercial drivers.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local transportation regulations.

Human Resources and Personnel Administration
  • Works closely with Human Resources and Labor Relations regarding employment-related matters.
  • Oversees application review processes, including verification of qualifications and conviction information.
  • Reviews allocations, position requests, requisitions, vacancies, and hiring documentation for accuracy.
  • Participates in and oversees interview and employee selection processes.
  • Conducts and assists with annual and probationary evaluations of management and supervisory personnel.
  • Applies District policies, negotiated agreements, and progressive discipline procedures appropriately.

Reporting and Communication
  • Gathers information and prepares state and District reports.
  • Communicates effectively verbally and in writing with internal and external stakeholders regarding transportation operations and services.

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and skills would be:

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in public administration, business administration, fleet management, purchasing, or a related field preferred.

Experience:
  • Two (2) years of continuous professional experience managing a medium-sized transportation or business operation with multiple divisions and oversight of more than 150 employees;

OR
  • Five (5) years of continuous professional experience managing a medium-sized transportation or business operation with multiple divisions and oversight of more than 150 employees.

Licenses/Certificates:
  • Valid Nevada Commercial Class A or B Driver's License with Air Brake, Passenger, and School Bus endorsements.
  • Nevada State Certified School Bus Instructor/Evaluator desired.
  • Third-Party CDL Examiner preferred but not required.

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year.
