Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Director of Student Advising & Success Services and the Student Success Services Team, the Assistant Director of Student Advising & Success Services manages the day-to-day advising operations for Cascadia's degree and certificate programs, ensuring a high level of consistency, quality, and responsiveness. In addition to providing a full range of academic advising services, this position develops, manages and assesses new and ongoing initiatives that promote student success, retention, and equity within advising. This position will also serve as the Application Administrator for EAB Navigate360.

In collaboration with the Director, the Assistant Director provides leadership to advising staff by helping prioritize and assign work, delivering training, and supporting the administering and oversight of departmental functions. The Assistant Director represents the department and the College at meetings, workshops and serves as the main supervisory and budgetary contact for the department in the absence of the Director.

As the Assistant Director of Student Advising & Success Services, the incumbent is expected to demonstrate daily a high degree of empathy, cultural awareness, and commitment to student success when working with students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This includes fostering an inclusive environment that values diverse perspectives, promotes equity in all areas of practice, and actively works to address institutional barriers that affect historically marginalized populations.

Initial Salary: $84,812.10 (includes 5% King County Premium Pay) County Premium Pay (KCPP)

Supervising Position: Director of Student Advising & Success Services

Essential Duties

Program Administration
  • Assist the Director in developing and maintaining academic advising policies and procedures within the department.
  • Develop and lead workshops for current and prospective students on a variety of advising, career and transfer-related topics.
  • Assist the Director with recruiting, hiring, training and mentoring new full-time and part-time advisors.
  • Manage advising staff schedules, including drop-in advising and new student registration sessions.
  • Manage departmental email and appointment scheduling processes.
  • Communicate departmental and academic program changes in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Develop and conduct regular assessments of the effectiveness, accessibility and equity of services provided by the Student Advising and Success Services.
  • Coordinator student placement information and procedures for mathematics, English and other departments in collaboration with faculty and Enrollment Services Staff.
  • Serve as Application Administrator for EAB Navigate, which is responsible for user role management, system configuration and data analysis.
  • Act as an Assistant Student Conduct Officer.
Program Development
  • Develop policies, programs and materials that support retention, persistence and completion through and equity-focused approach.
  • Develop and deliver training and professional development opportunities for academic advisors.
  • Create and maintain the Advising Manual and other advising resources in multiple formats.
Supervision
  • Supervise student employees and part-time hourly academic advisors.
  • Supervise full-time academic advising staff in the Director's absence.
Academic Advising
  • Assist students with course selection and promoting academic progress planning.
  • Assist students with short-term and long-term goal setting, major, transfer planning and career exploration.
  • Assist students in understanding and meeting course prerequisites.
  • Interpret test scores and unofficial transcripts and assign appropriate equivalencies
  • Deliver individual and/or group advising in person, by telephone, email or video conference settings
  • Apply equity focused and transformational advising practices to promote an accessible, equitable and superior education experience for all students.
  • Promote student success through proactive advising, support, and intervention strategies.
  • Connect students to on-campus resources to support their academic and personal success.
  • Design and deliver advising-related materials (e.g. handouts, webpages, and presentations) that support departmental goals and student success initiatives.
Committees and Meetings
  • Participate in advising-related and campus wide meetings, committees and training at the request of the Director of Student Advising and Success Services.
  • Co-lead weekly Academic Advising Consistency Meetings.
  • Attend and participate in professional development opportunities and professional organizations to remain current in the field.
  • Serve on the Navigate360 Implementation Team, which oversees software implementation and supports students, faculty and staff.
  • Attend training sessions and workshops to support effective use and administration of Navigate360.
Serves as the Director in their absence
  • Attend Cascadia and other meetings on behalf of the Director.
  • Serve as Student Conduct Officer.
  • Attend and participate in statewide Advisory Groups.
Other related duties as assigned

Education & Experience

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) years of experience in academic advising and/or career services in higher education.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and team skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and interest in diversity, equity and inclusion and the ability to support a multicultural workplace and educational environment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Student Development Administration, Education, Counseling, or Human Services or related field.
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience
  • Experience using technology to deliver of student success and advising services (e.g. ctclink/PeopleSoft, EAB Navigate)
  • One (1) year of experience working in student services at a community or technical college or comparable higher education environment that supports transfer students.
  • Demonstrated experience in student retention, first-year transition programs, career services, transfer services, or advising historically marginalized and underserved student populations.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering relevant presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Experience establishing program outcomes and assessing program effectiveness.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in a language in addition to English.

Physical Work Environment

Semi-Sedentary Work: Involves staying in a stationary position to a significant degree. Jobs are sedentary if moving is required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

The College is currently in hybrid operations, with many assignments completed in an online environment during this time. Full-time employees are expected to be on-campus at least three (3) days per week with the option to work remotely for the remainder of their working days. This position will perform work in a standard office setting, use standard office equipment and physically attend meetings both on and off campus and requires the ability to communicate in person or through appropriate means.

Positions in this class typically require operating a computer, communicating, observing, and repetitive motions.

This position involves exerting between 10-30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to transport, put, install, remove, or otherwise move objects, with or without reasonable accommodation.
