Assistant Director of Special Education

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's Degree with emphasis in Special Education or higher
  • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Licensure as Administrator of Special Education
  • Minimum of three years in the role of a team chair / supervisor / special education administrator
  • Strong communication, interpersonal/public relation skills, and demonstrated experience in the use of effective problem resolution and collaborative decision-making model
  • Exceptions to the above qualifications shall be made as the Superintendent deems appropriate and acceptable


REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education

SUPERVISES: Assigned Staff

JOB GOAL:
  • To work with staff across the district and provide leadership and coordination in improving the quality of instruction to ensure sustained achievement for students with disabilities at the preschool, elementary, middle and high school levels.
  • To coordinate and monitor a comprehensive system of services to support the needs of students with disabilities.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensure district compliance with all federal and state education laws and regulations, as well as compliance with Winchendon's School Committee policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and monitor the screening, referral, evaluation, and placement for students with disabilities.
  • Provide technical assistance and case consultation to school-based administrators/staff.
  • Collaborate with Principals, school-based staff, parents, and community stakeholders to ensure FAPE in the LRE for students with disabilities.
  • Support and monitor the planning, coordination, management, and assessment of all special education programs/services to ensure all students equal access to the general curriculum.
  • Assist in the coordination and oversight of Extended Year Services (ESY).
  • Assist the Director of Special Education to monitor staff caseloads, workloads, and building assignments.
  • Assist in the monitoring and the development of budget analysis and grant initiatives.
  • Manage out of district student caseload by attending meetings, managing IEP writing and establishing communication with families and old schools.
  • Assist with data collection for circuit breaker reimbursement for Out of the District and In-District students.
  • Coordinate, plan, and facilitate professional development opportunities for district staff on the needs of students with disabilities and at-risk students.
  • Assist in establishing and overseeing contracts and outside negotiations for services provided by external agencies, contractors, and/or individual persons.
  • Represent the Special Education Department and Director at various meetings and conferences
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Director.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary, work year, and benefits will be established by the Superintendent and in accordance with individually negotiated agreements.

EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated annually using mutually agreed upon tools.

Starting Salary: $95,000
