Description:

Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Director, Financial Information & Processing Support (FIPS), the Assistant Director, Financial Information & Processing Support (FIPS) is responsible for leading the Financial Information & Processing Support team that, on a continually changing basis, provides a wide range of services involving financial and finance related staff support available on a flexible, part time and/or temporary basis to support the operations of all departments (academic, administrative, ancillary, student service) on the UTM campus.

The incumbent oversees all aspects of internal audit for transaction processing ensuring adherence to University policy and GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles). The incumbent oversees the training of staff in a high turnover operation and continually assesses the needs of customers and how the unit can add value to the campus. The Assistant Director, FIPS develops business solutions for customer departments and provides financial advice to departments on appropriate processes and procedures, and assists with financial issues regarding the administration of research grants and contracts. The incumbent must be able to work with all levels of staff in identifying situations that change to continually create and document new business processes.

The Assistant Director, FIPS also leads a variety of projects with a focus on statistical reports, analysis, reconciliation, investigating discrepancies and assisting with budgets, forecasts, fielding queries, instructing on monthly account reconciliation, and providing on-going support while always ensuring that University policies and procedures are followed.

Qualifications:

Education

Completion of a University degree and a professional accounting designation (CA, CMA or CGA) or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience in finance and business management is required

Experience

  • Five years related experience in progressively senior level accounting and financial positions, including supervision of accounting staff, guidance to staff not directly supervised and experience advising various managers.
  • Experience in team building, training and managing staff in a unionized environment required.
  • Experience in budgeting, forecasting and research accounting, required.
  • Significant experience with administrative management systems (e.g. FIS, HRIS, RIS) required.
  • Experience in a University setting and an understanding of a University's organizational structure including its governance, mission and intersection with the broader community is an asset.
  • Experience with University budgeting and research accounting and and knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices in a University environment are an asset.


Skills

  • Highly developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated record of success in researching, analyzing, making recommendations, providing risk assessments and options. Knowledge of University's SAP based Administrative Management Systems (AMS) and related applications (FIS, HRIS) or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience liaising with senior administrators, responding to and handling matters of a complex and sensitive nature.
  • Ability to work independently and to perform effectively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy and deal with people in a clam and effective manner in sometimes sensitive situation and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and the ability to respond rapidly to change; ability to respect matters of a sensitive nature and exercise discretion, and tact; good judgment and the ability to work under pressure; superior organizational skills in planning, project management and task coordination; attention to detail; flexibility and problem solver orientation.
  • Ability to respond to and initiate change and to work well under pressure.
