Job Description

The Assistant Director, Facility Operations, Texas A&M Semiconductor Institute (TSI), under the direction of the Director, Fabrication and Facility Operations, supports the development and execution of operational systems for TSl's semiconductor research facilities. This position assists with daily facility operations, equipment readiness, user access and training workflows, safety documentation, preventive maintenance coordination, vendor and service coordination, supply and consumable management, and facility operating procedures. The Assistant Director serves as a senior operational resource for laboratory staff, research users, vendors, and internal business operations partners, helping ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient use of facility space, equipment, and support systems.

Responsibilities:

- Under the direction of the Director, Fabrication and Facility Operations, assists in implementing facility operating systems for TSI research laboratories, cleanroom spaces, process areas, and related technical support spaces.

- Coordinates day-to-day facility operations, including user access, equipment scheduling support, training workflows, supply readiness, service coordination, and operational issue tracking.

- Supports the development, maintenance, and implementation of standard operating procedures, user guides, training materials, safety checklists, equipment-use documentation, and related facility records.

- Assists with onboarding new users, researchers, staff, students, vendors, and visitors into facility operating protocols, including safety expectations, access requirements, equipment-use processes, and escalation pathways.

- Coordinates preventive maintenance schedules, vendor service visits, repair requests, calibration needs, equipment downtime tracking, and related documentation.

- Works with the Director and laboratory support staff to monitor equipment readiness, identify recurring operational issues, and recommend improvements to facility workflows, documentation, or user-support systems.

- Serves as a senior operational resource to laboratory coordinators and technical support staff, helping prioritize daily work, troubleshoot operational issues, and ensure consistent implementation of facility procedures.

- Coordinates with business operations staff on supply ordering, consumables tracking, equipment service requests, purchase documentation, vendor coordination, and related administrative processes.

- Supports safety, chemical inventory, waste handling, labeling, storage, inspection readiness, and compliance documentation in coordination with applicable safety offices and facility leadership.

- Maintains or supports facility records related to equipment status, user training, maintenance history, consumables, access, vendors, and operational metrics.

- Assists with planning and operational readiness for new equipment installations, facility modifications, tool moves, commissioning activities, and user-transition planning.

- Supports continuous improvement of facility operations, including workflow efficiency, safety practices, user experience, equipment utilization, and documentation quality.

- May supervise, train, schedule, or provide day-to-day direction to laboratory coordinators, technicians, student workers, temporary staff, or other facility support personnel.

- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

- Bachelor's degree in engineering, physical sciences, industrial technology, facilities management, laboratory management, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Six years of related experience in laboratory operations, research facility operations, technical facility support, semiconductor, microelectronics, cleanroom, manufacturing, engineering laboratory, or comparable technical environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Knowledge of laboratory or technical facility operations, equipment coordination, safety procedures, training documentation, inventory management, and vendor/service coordination.

- Ability to coordinate multiple operational workflows, communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, maintain accurate records, and work cooperatively with researchers, staff, vendors, and administrative partners.

- Ability to support mechanical, electrical, electro-mechanical, or process-related equipment workflows.

- May require work outside normal business hours to support facility operations, equipment maintenance, vendor service visits, emergency response, user support, or special projects.

- May require occasional travel to partner facilities, vendor sites, or member locations of The Texas A&M University System.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Master's degree in engineering. physical sciences, materials science, chemistry, physics, industrial technology, facilities management, or related field.
- Experience in a semiconductor. microelectronics, MEMS, cleanroom, advanced manufacturing, engineering research, or similar1y complex technical facility environment
- Experience supporting equipment installation, qualification, preventive maintenance, service contracts, user training, safety documentation, chemical or gas inventory coordination, hazardous waste coordination, cleanroom operations, or laboratory access control.
- Experience developing standard operating procedures, training records, equipment-use documentation, user onboarding materials, or facility operations dashboards.
- Experience coordinating with vendors, facilities teams, procurement, safety offices, researchers, and business operations staff.
- Relevant safety, facilities, cleanroom, hazardous materials, or equipment-related certifications preferred.
