SummaryProtection & Controls Engineers at the early-career and mid-career levels support the design, testing, analysis, and maintenance of the protection and control systems that safeguard NYPA's transmission and generation assets. These engineers work across both utility-focused and customer-focused environments, assisting with relay settings development, system disturbance analysis, protective device evaluations, and field inspections that ensure safe and reliable operation of critical infrastructure.
Early-career P&C Engineers gain meaningful exposure to transformative projects - such as advanced relaying upgrades, renewable integration protection schemes, digital fault recording modernization, and statewide transmission reliability enhancements - making this a strong role for those looking to build specialized expertise while contributing to New York's clean-energy future.
This posting allows NYPA to accept applications year-round and match candidates to opportunities as they become available. Roles at this level do not require a New York State PE license, and candidates are placed based on technical competencies, experience level, and interest areas.

- Support development of relay settings, one-line reviews, device evaluations, and communication system interfaces.
- Conduct system disturbance analysis and support recommendations for protective relaying adjustments.
- Participate in interdisciplinary coordination required for successful project execution.
- Develop engineering calculations, evaluation reports, and technical documentation under guidance.
- Provide support to maintenance groups, including reviewing job packages, verifying work completion, and ensuring safety procedures.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Foundational knowledge of power system theory, protective relaying principles, and P&C equipment.
- Ability to analyze engineering data, interpret results, and develop recommendations.
- Familiarity with communication systems (PLC, fiber, microwave, leased circuits).
- Working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations (NERC, NPCC, IEEE).
- Strong teamwork and communication skills; ability to collaborate with engineers, vendors, and field staff.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments with guidance and grow into increasingly complex P&C work.
