Area Manager

Sabine Surveyors is currently seeking an Area Manager in the Houston, TX area!

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for the following; other duties may be assigned as required:

  1. Coordinating the work of staff surveyors to ensure a balanced workload, proper assignments according to experience, cross-training whenever possible, and time off when needed.
  2. Performing marine surveys on a direct basis as needed.
  3. Ensuring the timely flow of information to/from clients including monitoring receipt of assignments, acknowledgement of assignments to clients, and ensuring preliminary advice is prepared and submitted after completion of fieldwork.
  4. Producing and submitting concise, technical, and grammatically correct final survey reports based on the appropriate report template in line with Company procedures and schedules and the customers' requirements.
  5. Participating in the formulation and administration of company policies and developing long range goals and objectives.
  6. Assisting management in developing assumptions regarding the volumes of business that could be expected under the current business plan and under alternative strategies.
  7. Handling of customer complaints and adjustment of invoices.
  8. Promoting company services in the marine industry including visiting clients and participating in industry activities.
  9. Supervising on-going training to staff surveyors including monthly safety meetings.
  10. Representing the interests of surveyors to upper management in the areas of time utilization, training, safety, compensation, benefits, and morale.
  11. Assisting the President in the preparation of the annual budget.
  12. Pursuing personal development through training.
  13. Ensuring that proper PPE is maintained and worn at all times as required.
  14. Ensuring all required equipment is calibrated and in good working order and records maintained as per our Quality and Environmental Procedures.
  15. Obtaining proper credentials to enter terminals, docks, and job sites as appropriate, and maintain records as required by Company procedures.


Required Education & Experience:

  1. Degree in a related field plus five (5) years of experience, or seagoing experience to Chief Officer level, or ten (10) years of experience in a similar position.
  2. Membership in NAMS Global or a similar organization dedicated to professionalism, ethics, and continuing education within the marine industry.
  3. Outstanding reporting and technical writing skills are a requirement.
  4. Current valid driver's license.
  5. Current valid Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC)


Working Conditions:

  1. Open-air conditions such as noisy, hot, cold, wet, dusty, etc.
  2. Must wear hearing, eye, and head protection and proper PPE.
  3. Some climbing (40' or higher, some unprotected), bending, stooping, and lifting (50 pounds) are involved.
  4. Working with hot and sometimes hazardous materials.
  5. Working on marine vessels, docks, warehouses, yards, or in shipyard settings, walking over uneven surfaces.
  6. Enter round manholes with inside diameters of 18", and other internally confined spaces.
  7. Traverse gangways, ladders, and scaffolding at varying heights.
  8. Examine cargo, including photographing, and accessing difficult areas.
  9. Available/On call 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
