About the Role

The Area Business Manager (ABM) is responsible for supporting the operational performance and success of a group of veterinary hospitals throughout the Rochester, New York area.

Reporting to the Regional Director of Operations (RDO), the Area Business Manager serves as a hands-on operational partner to hospital leadership teams, helping translate regional strategy and priorities into consistent execution at the hospital level.

This leader works closely with Practice Managers/Hospital Administrators, Medical Directors, and hospital leadership teams to improve performance, strengthen culture, develop leaders, and deliver an exceptional client and patient experience.

The ABM spends significant time in hospitals, building relationships with teams, identifying opportunities, removing barriers, and ensuring that agreed-upon initiatives and performance plans are successfully executed.

Key Responsibilities

People, Team & Culture
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with hospital leadership teams and team members across the Rochester market.
  • Coach and develop Practice Managers/Hospital Administrators and other hospital leaders to strengthen leadership capability, accountability, and business acumen.
  • Partner with the RDO and People Operations to support recruiting, retention, engagement, performance management, and team member development strategies.
  • Conduct regular hospital visits to assess team health, understand operational challenges, identify opportunities, and support execution.
  • Help hospital leaders establish clear expectations and create a culture of accountability and follow-through.
  • Identify high-potential team members and support leadership development and succession planning.
  • Champion the organization's mission, values, and leadership principles across the hospitals.
  • Serve as a visible and approachable resource for hospital leaders and teams.

Financial & Operational Performance
  • Partner with the RDO and hospital leadership teams to execute strategies designed to achieve established financial and operational goals.
  • Monitor hospital-level KPIs and identify trends, opportunities, and areas requiring additional focus.
  • Use data to help hospital leaders understand performance and develop actionable plans for improvement.
  • Support hospital leaders with budgeting, forecasting, labor management, expense management, and operational planning.
  • Help identify opportunities to improve revenue, productivity, profitability, and overall hospital performance.
  • Maintain consistent follow-up on hospital action plans and ensure commitments and initiatives are carried through to completion.
  • Identify operational barriers and work collaboratively with hospital teams, the RDO, and support partners to resolve them.
  • Leverage available systems, tools, and best practices to improve efficiency and consistency across hospitals.

The ABM supports execution and hospital-level performance; the RDO retains overall accountability for regional strategy, financial performance, and portfolio results.

Hospital Operations & Execution

  • Ensure regional and organizational initiatives are implemented consistently at the hospital level.
  • Help leaders prioritize competing operational needs and translate broader organizational priorities into actionable hospital plans.
  • Identify best practices within the market and help replicate successful approaches across hospitals.
  • Support hospitals through periods of change, leadership transition, growth, or performance improvement.
  • Escalate significant operational, financial, people, or leadership risks to the RDO when appropriate.
  • Maintain consistent communication with the RDO regarding hospital performance, progress, risks, and opportunities.

Client & Patient Experience
