Job Description:

    Facilities Development Management, Office of the University Architect (OUA), seeks an Architect Senior to act on behalf of the University Architect as the owner’s Design Manager during the design and construction phases of Lab, Advanced Manufacturing and Research centered projects. The primary role of the Architect Senior is to oversee the planning, architectural layouts, and technical specifications developed by Design Professionals for scientific and research facilities. Key duties include managing multidisciplinary A/E and Construction teams, to ensure compliance with building codes, lab safety codes, ASU Guidelines and aligning facility layouts with user needs and budgets.


    The Architect Senior role implements and tracks the contributions of subject matter experts (SMEs) in the fields of Planning, Labs, Interior Design, Environmental Graphics, Move Coordination and Landscape Architecture.  The Architect Senior will also interact with other internal FDM departments as required for permitting, regulatory approvals including historic preservation and asbestos clearances, and coordination with local jurisdictions as required.

    Essential Duties:

    • Perform complex assignments in the management of programming, design, production and observation of capital and related projects; solicits and documents input from internal and external clients, and coordinates with applicable regulatory agencies. 

    • Develop and manage the scope, budget, and schedule through the Project Definition and Design phases of the project.

    • Technical Oversite of Construction Documents, Details, and Specifications.

    • Coordinate and manage projects in accordance with Arizona Board of Regents policies.

    • Review work of consulting architects and construction managers to ensure that University guidelines and contractual requirements are met. 

    • Provide advice and information to outside consultants concerning space planning guidelines, architectural guidelines, campus planning, and institutional goals. 

    • Work collaboratively with a variety of involved stakeholders including, but not limited to: landscape architects, historic preservation coordinator, and environmental graphics staff to coordinate project scope. 

    • May supervise activities of subordinate staff members as part of a project team and perform other tasks as assigned.

    • Think critically and present relevant data and information.

    • Participate and encourage support of the institution's sustainability programs.  

    • Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.  

    • Use ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

    DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday, 8:00AM-5:00PM

    This position is based at ASU’s Tempe campus but will require working from other campuses depending on operational needs.  

    Position Salary Range:

    $85,000 - $88,400 annually, commensurate experience and education. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.

    Desired Qualifications:

    Experience in:

    • Technically Sophisticate Facilities such as: Semiconductor Manufacturing, Cleanrooms, Wet and Dry Laboratories, Process Piping, Mission Critical, etc.

    • Architectural design experience in interior tenant improvements, renovations and additions (e.g. laboratory, office/classroom). Eight (8 years)

    • Architecture and architectural principles, practices and techniques.

    • Reviewing and interpreting federal and state building and accessibility code requirements.  

    • Developing test fits and space planning.

    • Experience in Construction Administration and Field Observations

    • Conducting, interpreting and preparing building condition assessments.  

    • Preparing budgets during the conceptual design phase.

    • Higher education or municipal government environment.

    • Managing multiple projects and coordinating the work of a design team to ensure compliance with the program statement.  

    • Managing various project delivery methods including Job Order Contract (JOC), Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) and Design Build (DB).

    • Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Autodesk AutoCAD, Bluebeam Revue and PMIS (project management information software) programs.

    • Building systems, materials and construction methods.

    • Structural, mechanical and electrical engineering systems as they pertain to overall building construction and costs.

    • Managing multiple projects and coordinating the work of a design team to ensure compliance with the program statement. 

    • Evidence of being Registered as an Architect in the State of Arizona OR NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) Certification and become a registered Architect in the State of Arizona within six (6) months after date of hire.” 

    • Evidence of effective communication skills​​​​​

    Demonstrated knowledge of:

    • MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

    • Autocad or Revit software, and Sketch up electronic sketching software

    • Federal and state facility Life Safety and International Building Code requirements

    • Use of Means Cost Estimating, Uni-Format/other industry construction cost guides

    • Architecture and architectural principles, practices and techniques. 

    • Federal and state facility and code requirements.

    Working Environment:

    • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.

    • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.  

    • Drives University vehicle and/or cart to campus site.
