Full Job Description
Applied AI Engineer

Valthos Inc.

Valthos is an applied biological intelligence company. We build and deploy software and biological AI systems to safeguard humanity.

The same AI architectures that enable self-driving cars, land rockets with precision, and deliver expert-level reasoning are beginning to be deployed in biological design. To stay ahead, we must advance our arsenal of tools to capture and design against real-time sensitivities in nature's evolving mutational landscape.

We are a group of mission-driven software engineers from Palantir, applied biological ML engineers from MIT's Broad Institute making the latest advances in computational biology accessible in the real-world for federal and commercial use.

About the Role

We are a small, highly motivated team. Leadership and autonomy are extended to those who take initiative and consistently deliver high-quality outcomes.

As biological systems become exponentially easier to design - biology will be the defining technology of the 21st century. This has opened up a new paradigm. In order to drive real-world value - such as for biosecurity and therapeutic design of biologics- we need to build systems that can intelligently orchestrate and connect the dots between these biological methods to make them usable. Some of our work is fine-tuning powerful models, some of our work is in high-velocity product engineering to make these models available in the real-world, and some of the work we do is ensuring that all of the above takes place in the fastest, end-to-end way.

This is an applied role that stretches across software to AI engineering, with a strong emphasis on post-training optimization, benchmarking, and integration of advanced AI models into real-world workflows.

In this role you will:
  • Work in flat, collaborative environment, closely partnering with computational biology and engineering teams to ensure models are scientifically rigorous and operationally robust.
  • Benchmark models and develop evaluation frameworks
  • Enhance model performance through system prompt tuning or fine-tuning, with an eye toward secure and scalable deployment.
  • Build AI-enabled tools to speed up our capabilities in end-to-end design workflows, streamlining and automating processes with software to significantly accelerate biological design cycles.
  • Ship effective, reliable AI solutions at high velocity, directly impacting biosecurity readiness and therapeutic advancements.
  • Own your projects end-to-end, from model optimization through integration and ongoing enhancements, ensuring continuous reliability and improvement in production environments.
