Departmental Overview

The Application Delivery group (within the Campus Applications & Data Unit) leads the operations of campus software solutions that support the University's enterprise administrative, finance and student systems. The objective of the Application Delivery group is to bring value to campus by securely maintaining these critical systems and supporting a continuous cycle of improvement and feature enhancements in a suite of tightly integrated custom and purchased systems.

To ensure the success of these mission-critical systems, Application Delivery is staffed with technical professionals who identify, design, create, test and implement new features, respond to campus needs, and keep all systems running optimally throughout the academic cycle and financial year. Application Delivery partners with areas across the university to ensure systems support efficient and effective operations, while introducing functionality to best support students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members.

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Applications Administrator serves as a skilled Application Administrator with a primary focus on enterprise PeopleSoft application administration, security, and automation for campus student applications and developer services. This position independently performs a full range of responsibilities including the operational support, installation, configuration, and ongoing maintenance of enterprise PeopleSoft environments and multi-tier web applications.

A primary focus of this role is maintaining high operational availability and ensuring architectural safety through proactive patching and the use of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g., Ansible, Terraform) to standardize and automate application environments. Key duties include managing deployment automation, executing routine migrations, implementing secure configuration choices, and providing tiered support across diverse technology stacks. Additionally, the Applications Administrator provides essential application support, executes code and object migrations across PeopleSoft environments, and coordinates disaster recovery testing to ensure operational continuity across the unit's integrated software suite.

Responsibilities

Application Administration & DevOps Automation - 45%
  • Performs technical installation, configuration, and ongoing maintenance of enterprise applications and multi-tier web environments across diverse technology stacks.
  • Utilizes Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g., Ansible, Terraform) to standardize environments and automate repeatable application deployment cycles.
  • Develops and maintains CI/CD pipelines to automate application deployments, ensuring consistent and repeatable release cycles.
  • Coordinates with developers to troubleshoot moderately complex application-layer issues and optimize system performance.
Security, Patching & Vulnerability Management - 25%
  • Proactively monitors and applies security patches, maintenance updates, and vendor fixes to application environments to mitigate risks and ensure architectural safety.
  • Implements secure architectural choices by applying campus and industry security standards to the design and configuration of systems.
  • Administers security policies and access controls to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive institutional data.
  • Coordinates remediation efforts within the application stack based on identified vulnerabilities.
Cloud & Enterprise Service Support - 10%
  • Performs core operational administration, routine code/object migrations, and environment maintenance for enterprise PeopleSoft applications.
  • Administers application resources in public cloud environments (Amazon Web Services (AWS) / Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)), assisting with migrations and environment provisioning.
  • Coordinates the maintenance and testing of disaster recovery and business continuity solutions for application environments in both on-premises and cloud-hosted infrastructures.
Infrastructure Operations & Monitoring - 10%
  • Maintains and supports centralized developer services (e.g., GitLab SaaS) and observability tools (e.g., Elastic, Logstash, Kibana (ELK) stack, Oracle's Observability & Management (O&M)) provided to the unit.
  • Monitors capacity for application environments, infrastructure components, and cloud services, making recommendations for hardware or cloud resource adjustments to ensure optimal performance.
  • Provides on-call support for mission-critical application software as needed to maintain high availability.
Documentation & Collaboration - 5%
  • Creates and maintains detailed technical documentation for application architectures, deployment procedures, and security configurations.
  • Collaborates with diverse technical teams (Network, Database, Security) to resolve moderately complex interoperability issues across disparate hardware, operating systems, and cloud environments.

  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Terraform) to automate application environments and deployments.
  • Thorough professional knowledge of varied middleware and application frameworks, with experience installing and configuring diverse technology stacks.
  • Experience with secure configuration practices to ensure application-layer integrity and architectural safety.
  • Ability to write and execute moderately complex scripts (e.g., Bash, Shell, Python) for system management and direct server-side log analysis (e.g., WebLogic, App Server logs) to supplement centralized monitoring.
  • Proficiency with Git-based version control and building automated deployment pipelines (e.g., GitLab).
  • Knowledge of web application stacks (e.g., Ruby on Rails/JRuby, Tomcat) and React frontends.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Availability to provide after-hours, weekend, and holiday support for mission-critical systems.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $126,803.03 to $155,582.74 (steps 1.0 - 5.5).
  • This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week) Career position eligible for UC benefits.
