Full Job Description
The Application Test Engineer is responsible for planning and executing battery application testing to evaluate the feasibility of new product use cases. This role analyzes test data, prepares reports, and communicates findings across the organization. The individual will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality technical assessments for product applications and development efforts. This position is based on site at ZincFive headquarters in Tualatin, Oregon and reports to the Lead Applications Engineer.

Application Test Engineer Job Duties:
  • Develop and execute test plans to evaluate the feasibility of novel customer applications for NiZn battery systems
  • Create test plans aligned with customer, product, and functional requirements
  • Define testing requirements and specify appropriate test stands, fixtures, and equipment needed to execute test plans
  • Evaluate new product application requests to determine feasibility and define appropriate application testing requirements
  • Set up, configure, and adapt test stands and measurement equipment to ensure testing is performed accurately and in accordance with requirements
  • Install and integrate devices under test (DUTs) in appropriate test stands and equipment
  • Develop, implement, and validate automated test algorithms to ensure data integrity, repeatability, and test reliability
  • Conduct and lead safety and risk assessments in collaboration with internal stakeholders to ensure hazards are identified, mitigated, and managed in accordance with internal procedures, external regulations, and industry best practices
  • Initiate and monitor test protocols, ensuring proper operation of test stands and equipment to achieve valid and reliable results
  • Analyze test data using standard statistical methods to assess application feasibility and prepare clear, concise technical reports summarizing findings
  • Develop test schedules and manage multiple projects simultaneously, providing regular updates to stakeholders regarding progress, risks, delays, and next steps
  • Collaborate with engineering and technical teams to support troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement of test methods and setups
  • Coordinate with customers, third parties, and test laboratories to define requirements, assess technical feasibility, ensure testing needs are met, and recommend appropriate solutions

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field
  • 3+ years of test engineering experience or a related role
  • Experience with electrochemical energy storage systems from the cell to system level (i.e., NiZn based, Lithium-ion, or similar battery technologies)
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and work from technical requirements and specifications
  • Proficiency in data analysis and standard statistical methods
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly identify, diagnose, and resolve technical issues related to test stands, instrumentation, and measurement systems
  • Experience analyzing data and preparing technical reports and presentations using Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Python, and/or other data analysis tools
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively both internally and externally
  • Hands-on experience using common machine shop tools to modify or build test fixtures and equipment

Preferred Experience/Skills:
  • Master's degree in engineering or a related technical related field
  • Experience with battery cyclers and other standard electrochemical test equipment
  • Experience with battery energy storage system applications, particularly in the data center market

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop and ability to climb ladders as needed
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including protection against high voltage hazards when required
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to hear audible signals and close visual acuity including the ability to distinguish colors
  • Manufacturing, office, R&D and engineering laboratory environments
  • Must be able to maintain a level state of alertness while performing this job
