About the RoleThe Emergency Psychiatry APP provides psychiatric evaluation and management for patients with a wide range of behavioral health and medical needs. Patient populations may include individuals experiencing:
- Suicidal ideation or self-harming behaviors
- Mood and psychotic disorders
- Intoxication and substance withdrawal
- Delirium and dementia
- Difficulty coping with acute or chronic illness
- Behavioral crises and other complex psychiatric presentations
You will provide care within our
Level I Trauma Center Emergency Department as well as support emergency departments throughout the Carilion system.
More Than a Traditional Clinical RoleThis position combines
direct patient care, psychiatric consultation, staff education, crisis intervention, and quality improvement.
The PMHNP will take a proactive and engaged approach to improving the care and safety of behavioral health patients in the emergency setting. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting psychiatric evaluations and developing treatment recommendations.
- Providing psychiatric medication management when appropriate.
- Responding to behavioral health emergencies and assisting with crisis stabilization.
- Supporting efforts to reduce the use of restraints through early intervention and de-escalation strategies.
- Evaluating and supporting patients who screen positive for specific behavioral health concerns, including suicidal ideation and trauma-related symptoms.
- Developing and implementing individualized behavioral plans.
- Providing real-time, "just-in-time" education and training for emergency department staff.
- Serving as a clinical resource for de-escalation, crisis mitigation, and early identification of behavioral health needs.
- Participating in initiatives designed to improve quality, safety, and the patient experience.
A Highly Collaborative EnvironmentYou won't do this work alone. You'll be part of a multidisciplinary team that includes
psychiatrists, physicians, social workers, therapists, peer recovery specialists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
The position also works closely with Carilion's dedicated
Emergency Psychiatry Program and Addiction Medicine team, providing an integrated approach for patients with complex psychiatric, medical, and substance-use needs.
Schedule- Primarily daytime hours
- Weekends as needed
- Holidays rotated equitably among team members
What We're Looking ForThe ideal candidate is a
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who is comfortable working with complex patients and enjoys collaborating with both behavioral health and emergency medicine teams.
Candidates should demonstrate strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, flexibility, and an interest in education and improving systems of care.
What We Require:Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner program or an accredited Physician Assistant program required.
Experience: Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience preferred. Additional experience may be required based on specialty.
Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: Licensed or eligible for licensure as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Nurse Practitioners must also hold a current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia. Must be eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with state regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine.
Life Support: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications required as appropriate to the position.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of Carilion Clinic, the Virginia Board of Medicine or Nursing, and applicable certifying bodies. Must meet practice and managed care credentialing requirements and qualify for malpractice insurance coverage. Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare providers. Strong written and verbal communication skills required. Proficiency with electronic medical records and standard computer systems required.

Compensation Range:$107,993.60 - $172,785.60
Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
