Position Purpose

The Technologist-Engineering position is responsible for the application of engineering technology to facilitate the design, construction and reliable operation of the distribution system and smart grid technologies, as well as the preparation of designs, cost estimates, bills of material and coordination of contract work relating to the electrical distribution and street lighting systems and transformer substations, with demonstrated commitment to safety, teamwork and respect in the workplace.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities
  • Perform voltage regulation and fault calculations, protective device coordination, load flow analysis, and distribution system optimization using manual calculations methods and/or utility distribution system modelling and analysis software with the understanding of the underlying concepts in order to make judgements on system reliability and performance
  • Forecast loads and load increases online sections, feeders and transformer station buses and make recommendations for distribution system changes and improvements to accommodate future load growth, distributed generation and smart grid technologies
  • Develop and maintain standard designs, specifications and engineering processes and tools to facilitate distribution and street lighting systems design, material procurement and construction
  • Design and co-ordination of supply arrangements to commercial, industrial and distributed generation customers including connection impact assessments, coordination and administration of operating agreements for embedded generation customers, and preparation of customer connection agreements
  • Preparation of designs, bills of material, estimates of cost, construction details, drawings and diagrams relating to extensions and changes to the distribution and street lighting systems, including overhead and underground installations, in conformance with CSA, ESA, Alectra and OEB standards, regulations, policies and codes
  • Liaison between City Staff, other utilities, consultants, developers, contractors, customers and various Alectra departments to ensure the timely provision of electrical power
  • Perform field survey work to determine potential routing of distribution system facilities, proper pole line locations, trench lines and grade levels
  • Inspection of material and work being carried out under contract to verify that the material and work conform to the drawings and specifications
  • Co-ordination of joint use activities with other utilities
  • Review completed work orders and projects, and ensure that master distribution, street lighting and operating drawings, and records are updated and that charges for labour, material and contract work are accurate
  • Other duties as assigned by an Engineering Division Supervisor, Engineer or Manager
  • May be required to perform on-call duties

  • A class G driver's licence in good standing
