AI & Automation Developer

Reports to: IT and Business Systems Manager

The Opportunity

The AI & Automation Developer is a mid-level, hands-on technical role responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and supporting AI-enabled solutions, business process automations, system integrations, and software applications across the AIL Group of Companies.

Working directly with business, engineering, manufacturing, and IT stakeholders, you will identify high-value opportunities for AI, automation, and process improvement, translate business needs into practical technical solutions, integrate systems and data, and help advance the organization's digital capabilities.

The successful candidate will combine strong development skills with sound business judgment and a focus on building solutions that are secure, reliable, maintainable, and valuable to users.

What You'll Do
  • AI Solution Development: Design, develop, and implement AI-enabled solutions that improve engineering, manufacturing, sales, operational, and administrative processes, employee productivity, decision-making, and customer or user experiences.
  • Process Automation: Build and maintain automated workflows that reduce repetitive work, improve consistency, and increase operational efficiency.
  • Software Development: Develop, enhance, and support software applications, scripts, utilities, and other technical solutions that address business requirements.
  • Systems Integration: Create and maintain integrations among business applications, databases, cloud services, AI platforms, and enterprise systems using APIs and other integration methods.
  • AI & Agent Integration: Integrate AI technologies, models, AI agents, agentic workflows, and services into existing applications and workflows where they provide measurable business value.
  • Business Analysis & Requirements: Partner with stakeholders to understand current processes, identify improvement opportunities, gather and document requirements, and translate them into effective technical solutions.
  • Testing & Support: Test, troubleshoot, debug, and support applications, automations, integrations, and AI-enabled solutions, including identifying root causes and implementing lasting resolutions.
  • Data: Work with structured and unstructured data, including database queries, data transformations, validation, and integration.
  • AI Governance & Security: Apply appropriate safeguards and contribute to solution delivery in accordance with AIL's AI governance, cybersecurity, data privacy, data quality, access control, information-management, and responsible AI requirements.
  • Technology Evaluation: Evaluate emerging AI, automation, development, and integration technologies and recommend practical applications for the organization.
  • Continuous Improvement: Monitor implemented solutions, measure adoption and business impact, and identify opportunities to improve reliability, maintainability, performance, security, user experience, and realized business value.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain technical documentation, workflow diagrams, solution designs, operating procedures, and user guides.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with IT colleagues, business departments, vendors, and other stakeholders to deliver solutions successfully.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What You Bring
  • A diploma or degree in computer science, software development, information technology, engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Typically, at least three years of relevant professional experience in software development, business process automation, systems integration, AI-enabled solutions, or a related technical field.
  • Proficiency in VB.NET and/or C++, with experience applying sound programming and object-oriented design principles to business solutions.
  • Practical knowledge of AI technologies and automation concepts, supported by experience developing or implementing AI-enabled applications, automated workflows, or comparable solutions.
  • Experience developing or consuming APIs and integrating applications, databases, cloud services, or enterprise systems.
  • Experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases, including querying, transforming, manipulating, and integrating data.
  • Experience using development environments, source control tools such as Git, and testing and debugging tools.
  • Working knowledge of software development practices, data structures, application architecture, and integration patterns.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to turn business challenges into practical and maintainable technical solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical and AI-related concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively, manage multiple priorities, and take ownership of work from requirements through implementation and ongoing support.

Additional Assets
  • Experience with cloud-based development, integration, or AI services.
  • Experience with workflow automation, low-code/no-code, or robotic process automation platforms.
  • Familiarity with generative AI, large language models, prompt design, retrieval-based solutions, AI agents, agentic workflows, or AI evaluation and monitoring.
  • Experience with application security, identity and access management, CI/CD practices, or production monitoring.
  • Experience delivering technology solutions in a manufacturing, engineering, multi-company, or cross-functional environment.
