Summary

We are recruiting for an Advanced Process Control (APC) Specialist/Engineer for our either our Edmonton or Calgary office. In this role, you will be responsible for participating in the entire life cycle of process control optimization projects, including: executing feasibility studies, process analysis, data analytics, business case development, advanced application development, alarm lifecycle management, solution engineering, implementation, site commissioning, and on-going solution support to ensure sustainability of business results and value. The APC Specialist/Engineer will demonstrate value by supplying process control solutions that are robust and deliver quantifiable business results to our customers. This position reports to the Manager, Advanced Process Control Services.

This position is open to both new graduates and experienced engineers.

Role and Responsibilities

As a key element of our Process Systems & Software team, you will improve customer operational reliability and performance through advanced process control technologies, industry expertise, and control engineering best practices.

Advanced Control & Process Optimization
  • Design and implement APC solutions utilizing platforms like Emerson DeltaV and AspenTech DMC
  • Design and deploy advanced regulatory control strategies
  • Conduct process reliability and control performance studies
  • Communicate with engineers and operators to understand customer operations, opportunities, and limitations
  • Perform regulatory control assessments, loop tuning, and variability reduction analysis
  • Identify and prioritize optimization opportunities
  • Quantify costs and projected benefits to estimate a return on investment
  • Analyze historical data to identify patterns, bottlenecks, and equipment issues


System Design & Configuration
  • Configure and integrate control systems, including DeltaV, PLCs, HMIs, OPC, and historians
  • Develop HMI graphics and operator interfaces
  • Build dynamic process simulations for testing and operator training (OTS)


Testing, Commissioning & Deployment
  • Develop test plans and execute internal and factory acceptance testing (FAT)
  • Lead site commissioning activities including loop tuning, bump testing, and controller deployment
  • Safely implement and commission MPC applications
  • Participate in customer reviews (e.g., HAZOPs)


Support, Troubleshooting & Training
  • Review control system logic, engineering documentation, and process data to troubleshoot advanced applications
  • Interview stakeholders to understand operational issues
  • Support plant start-ups, shutdowns, and ongoing operations
  • Deliver technical and operator training on implemented solutions
  • Provide technical expertise to customers and internal sales teams


Alarm Management
  • Design and support alarm management programs (ISA 18.2)
  • Conduct alarm assessments, rationalization, and KPI tracking
  • Maintain alarm management systems and implement continuous improvement practices


Qualifications and Skills

  • Undergraduate Degree or Master's Degree in Engineering
  • SAP experience considered an asset
  • Experience with DCS system and knowledge in process control/APC will be an asset
  • Experience with machine learning and artificial intelligence tools will be an asset
  • Exceptional communication skills and customer service practices
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Entrepreneurial work ethic
  • Willing to travel; valid Class 5 driver license required
  • This position has been deemed as Safety Sensitive - successful candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment Alcohol and Drug test
  • Physical requirements: able to lift up to 50 lbs.
