Full Job Description
The Advanced Practice Provider (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) will join a growing surgical team supporting both robotic-assisted surgical procedures and inpatient surgical patient care. This unique hybrid role offers the opportunity to work alongside surgeons in the operating room, assisting with robotic procedures, while also providing comprehensive clinical management of hospitalized surgical patients.

The APP will participate in robotic-assisted cases, serving as a key member of the surgical team by assisting with procedures, supporting surgeons during operations, and helping ensure efficient patient care throughout the perioperative process. Robotic surgery experience is preferred but not required, as specialized training and development opportunities are available.

In addition to operative responsibilities, the APP will provide inpatient coverage for a variety of surgical specialties, including urology, orthopedics, spine, plastic surgery, and other surgical services as needed. Responsibilities include postoperative management, patient assessment, treatment planning, coordination of care, discharge planning, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in surgery, prior surgical training or experience, and a desire to develop expertise in robotic-assisted procedures. Candidates should be comfortable working in a dynamic environment that combines operating room responsibilities with direct patient care and clinical management.

Schedule Highlights
• Combination of robotic surgery and inpatient surgical coverage responsibilities.
• Operating room shifts are generally scheduled Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with flexibility to remain until completion of active surgical cases.
• Inpatient coverage includes a mix of 10-hour and 13-hour shifts, including weekends and some off-shift coverage.
• Final rotation and scheduling structure are currently being developed- Flexibility is a must!

Preferred Qualifications
• Surgical training and/or previous surgical APP experience strongly preferred.
• Interest in robotic-assisted surgery and operative practice.
• Robotic surgery experience preferred but not required.

Required Qualifications
• Minimum of a Bachelor's degree. Must be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Program approved by the American Medical Association or an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
• Current, unrestricted Massachusetts Physician Assistant License or Massachusetts Nurse Practitioner License.
• National certification applicable to discipline (NCCPA for Physician Assistants; board certification for Nurse Practitioners).
• Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration (MCSR) and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration, or the ability to obtain upon hire, if prescribing medications is included in clinical duties and privileges.
• Demonstrated expert clinical judgment with the ability to function in an independent role.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with patients, families, physicians, staff, and interdisciplinary team members.
• Ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced clinical environment.
• Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal and written information in English.
• Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of all patient and organizational information.

Job Description:

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Responds to emergency situations, adhering to standards of practice and established procedures.

2. Obtains complete medical history of patients.

3. Perform physical examinations; orders diagnostic tests, interprets test results and imaging studies.

4. Places consult orders.

5. Formulates diagnosis and treatment plans.

6. Prescribes and/or dispenses medications.

7. Counsels patients and families as needed.

8. Completes discharge documentation.

Organizational Responsibilities

1. Follows hospital and department policies with special attention to safety, dress, attendance and punctuality, and display of ID badge. Subscribes to hospital's mission statement, code of ethics, and standards of conduct.
2. Handles all work-related information in a confidential manner, as outlined in Confidentiality Policy. Recognizes and respects each patient's right to privacy, and understands that this is protected by statute. Understands that looking up patient information not needed for job duties is prohibited and may be grounds for immediate dismissal.
3. Demonstrates initiative and creativity to continuously improve services, departmental and interdepartmental processes, and any other activities that affect quality.
4. Plans, organizes, and renders care for (neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric) patients within an assigned area.
5. Performs work responsibilities while staying in compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations. Understands and agrees to uphold the Hospital Compliance Plan.
6. Adheres to Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control plan including consistent use of safety devices as designed to prevent sharp injuries.

Patient Safety
1. When taking a telephone order, writes the order on the Doctor's Orders, reads the order back to the MD and document as a TORB.
2. When taking a verbal order, repeats the order back to the MD prior to implementing the order and documents as a VORB.
3. Uses only accepted abbreviations when documenting in the medical record.
4. Uses two unique patient identifiers prior to treatment or patient transport.
5. Adheres to Safe Injection Practices i.e. never reuses needles, cannulae and syringes.
6. Complies with Isolation Precautions including standard precautions; i.e, dons and removes appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by specific patient precautions.
7. Consistently complies with the hospital's Hand Hygiene Policy, i.e. cleans hands before every patient contact (even if gloves are worn), before donning sterile gloves for aseptic task, after handling body fluids, after every patient contact, and after contact with patient's environment.
8. Participates in EHS's TB program.
9. Participates in hospital's annual seasonal vaccine program (vaccination or declination completed).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. Minimum of a Bachelor's degree. Must also be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Program approved by the American Medical Association.
2. Must be licensed as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts.
3. A certificate issued by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), may be required for certain departments.
4. If prescribing medications is included in clinical duties and privileges, Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration are required.
5. 1-2 years prior experience in a similar health care or inpatient hospital setting preferred.
6. Expert clinical judgment to function in an independent role.
7. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to collaborate with patients, families, physicians, staff, and community health workers.
8. Ability to be self-directive and demonstrate initiative in addressing responsibilities of the position.
9. Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal and written information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
10. Ability to utilize appropriate problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
11. Must be able to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information

WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Normal patient care and operating room environment, with risk of exposure to infectious disease.

Pay Range:
$133,515.20 USD - $200,158.40 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
