Position Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Department of Surgery and serve as the primary Advanced Practice Provider (APP) representative for the surgical team at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) Cedar Campus.

This highly autonomous role functions as the Department of Surgery's on-site clinical expert and liaison at HUP Cedar, partnering closely with surgical teams at HUP's main campus at 34th and Spruce Street. The APP serves as the primary point of contact for surgical services, most often General, Urology, Vascular, and Colorectal Surgery. In this role you will collaborate with attending surgeons, hospital medicine providers, nursing leadership, case management, and other interdisciplinary team members to ensure seamless, high-quality surgical care.

The APP will practice at the top of their license, utilizing advanced clinical judgment and independent decision-making to evaluate, manage, and coordinate care for patients requiring surgical consultation and follow-up. This position offers a unique opportunity to care for a broad spectrum of surgical patients while serving in a role that supports surgical operations, patient throughput, interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuity of care across care settings.

Responsibilities

The APP will primarily:

• Perform comprehensive evaluations of new surgical consults across HUP Cedar.
• Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with attending surgeons and the primary hospitalist team.
• Manage ongoing surgical consults and follow patients throughout their hospitalization.
• Perform bedside procedures within credentialed privileges and scope of practice.
• Facilitate communication and coordination between HUP Cedar and Department of Surgery teams across Penn Medicine.
• Provide patient and family education regarding surgical conditions, treatment plans, and postoperative care.
• Assist in discharge planning and transitions of care to ensure continuity throughout the surgical journey.
• Support quality improvement initiatives, operational goals, and departmental projects aimed at enhancing patient care, access, and efficiency.

Practice Environment

As the dedicated Department of Surgery APP at HUP Cedar, you will be embedded within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment while maintaining significant autonomy in daily clinical practice. This role requires strong clinical expertise, critical thinking, communication skills, and the ability to effectively manage a diverse surgical patient population.

This role is primarily focused on consultative surgical care, patient management, care coordination, and clinical decision-making, with no operating room or first-assist responsibilities.

Qualifications and Governance

All Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants function under the guidelines established by the University of Pennsylvania Health System Medical Staff and are credentialed through the appropriate governing bodies. The PA or CRNP hired will be accountable through a formal job description, delineation of privileges, and collaborative/supervisory agreements as required by Penn Medicine and state regulations.

Credentials:

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Required)
• BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association (For providers in the ambulatory setting) required
• Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Masters Physician Assistant required
• Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Pennsylvania State license, active and in good standing at time of hire
• Prescriptive Authority (Required)
• Registered Nurse - PA (Required if Acute Care Nurse Practitioner)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

• Master of Arts or Science (Required)
• The CRNP and/or PA-C must be reviewed by the Credentials Committee and approved by the Medical Board.
• Education Specialization: Master's Degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice(DNP) in Nursing or Masters Prepared Physician Assistant
